Life & Work with Kenyatta Bosman of Louisville, Kentucky

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenyatta Bosman

Hi Kenyatta, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Kenyatta Bosman, and I go by they/them pronouns. I’m a 30-year-old artist, art teacher, brand ambassador for Nicole Scott Inc. As a proud member of the LGBTQ community and someone deeply rooted in my city, my mission as an artist has always been clear: to create a sanctuary, a space where every person can feel seen, understood, and free to express themselves without limits. It’s about more than just taking a photo; it’s about crafting an experience that leaves you feeling empowered, refreshed, and uplifted. This passion to connect through art has deep roots, and my story is one woven from moments of discovery, perseverance, and the power of embracing one’s unique path.

Growing up, my journey began with a bittersweet moment that would later shape how I see the world. I still remember a class assignment that left me feeling alone: we were asked to bring baby photos, but I had none to share. I felt the sting of being different, yet this would be the very thing that drove my appreciation for life’s fleeting moments. When I was about to turn five, my mother, a hardworking woman who always made the most of every opportunity, took me to a studio. She couldn’t afford baby photos, but she made sure to capture that one day, complete with a Blue’s Clues number 5. It wasn’t fancy, but it was special. And I think back on that moment often—how she created a little magic out of almost nothing, giving me my very first portrait.

As I grew, art naturally called to me. In elementary school, I lived for music and art days—the few hours each week when I could break away from textbooks and let my imagination flow. It was at Crosby Middle School where I began running track, yet something inside pulled me toward a different path. I joined the photography club, where I fell headfirst into the world of disposable and film cameras. Developing film in the darkroom became a practice in patience and skill. I learned to embrace the waiting, the mystery, and the thrill of seeing my work come to life.

High school only fueled my creative curiosity. In Telemedia, a digital media class, I discovered the magic of framing, angles, and storytelling with camcorders. These technical skills opened my eyes to how much power lies in a single image. Soon, photography became my language—a way to communicate, to capture, to share stories that words sometimes couldn’t express. When I graduated from Waggener Traditional High School, I knew that I wanted to take my love of photography further.

Life eventually drew me deeper into the world of art. I began visiting galleries and museums, especially the 21C Museum Hotel, which became my sanctuary for sleepless nights. The ever-changing exhibits inspired me, each visit a reminder that art could transform not just spaces but also minds and hearts. Photography started to take on a new meaning—it wasn’t just about capturing an image; it was about creating an experience that resonated with people.

Over the past five years, this journey has led to incredible opportunities I never imagined. I was honored to showcase my work in three group exhibitions at Roots 101 African American Museum and Quappi Projects. To my amazement, two of my portraits, “NYFW” and “King Loui,” were purchased by the very museum that had once been my refuge, the 21C Museum Hotel. Each exhibit and sale felt like a small miracle, proof that dreams—no matter how “crazy” they may seem—are worth chasing.

Beyond my personal projects, I’ve found purpose in sharing my love for art with the next generation. As an art teacher with the Healing Walls Project, I teach youth at the California Community Center how to create, explore, and express themselves. This role allows me to give back to my community in a way that feels deeply meaningful, blending my passion for art with a commitment to inspiring young artists.

My work has since been featured on platforms and spaces that inspire me. From Shine Junior 2017 on the Brandon TV app to the Speed Art Museum’s Bacchanal: Andy Warhol: REVOLUTION exhibit in 2019, and even a spot on NPR in 2020, it’s been a whirlwind of growth and gratitude. I’ve had the chance to present in New York for the FAT HAM photo gallery exhibit at Public National Black Theater, in Louisville Magazine, and as an extra in the BET+ film Dance for Me. Most recently, I modeled for Oneness Sneaker Boutique, showcasing the Nike Air Pegasus Wave, which is now featured on the Nike SNKRS app—a full-circle moment of blending my artistic vision with fashion.

As a brand ambassador for Nicole Scott Inc., I continue to expand my creative reach and impact, building connections and sharing my art and style with a wider audience. Every step of this journey has been a reminder to stay true to myself and to keep pushing forward, regardless of how unlikely success may seem. When I look back on how it all began—from a single portrait my mother captured for free in a studio—to today, I am endlessly grateful. Each photo, each experience, is part of a bigger picture: proof that when you follow your heart, even the wildest dreams can lead to extraordinary places.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced has been navigating challenges around my identity and sexuality, especially within our local music industry. At times, it’s felt like a balancing act, trying to find those open to collaborating without judgment or preconceptions. But over time, I’ve come to see these experiences as a filter, helping me identify the people who truly value authentic connections. Instead of letting those challenges hold me back, they’ve become a guide, showing me who’s willing to work with me wholeheartedly. It’s strengthened my resolve and given me a clearer sense of direction.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in capturing raw emotion and authenticity through my art, a journey that often begins with my own experiences of grief and introspection. As a bit of a homebody, my work is my way of stepping out into the world and connecting with my surroundings. I trust my intuition to guide me, allowing me to capture the essence of my subjects in a way that resonates deeply.

Beyond my art, I’m also a Reiki master and herbalist, so in my free time, I dive into the world of alchemy, crafting soaps, sugar scrubs, herbal oils, bath bombs, and more. This work is another extension of my passion for healing and connection, blending my love for natural elements with creativity.

One of my proudest achievements has been having my work acquired by the 21C Museum Hotel. Knowing they’re among my collectors feels surreal—it’s an honor I’ll never take for granted. Every visit there feels like a breath of fresh air, a reminder of the power of art to find a place in the world. I think what sets me apart is that my work doesn’t just depict a moment; it translates raw emotion, drawing viewers into a shared, honest experience.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe success is often misunderstood, with many people seeing it purely as a measure of wealth. For me, success is defined differently—it’s about fulfilling the promises I’ve made to myself, regardless of how long they take to achieve. I feel truly successful because I’ve done nearly everything I set out to do, and often even more than I originally dreamed. It’s that sense of commitment and perseverance, the ability to honor my own journey, that I think is most important to my success. It keeps me grounded and reminds me that I’m moving forward on my own terms.
