Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Gettenberg
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into the world of interior design was anything but conventional. My parents were regulatory compliance accountants on Wall Street and I was a creative. As a kid, I would rearrange my parents office furniture and paint my room during snow storms in New York. My passion for creating beautiful spaces developed at a young age.
Growing up as the black sheep shaped my values of authenticity and resilience. I knew I didn’t want to work with numbers and wanted to create my own path forward in the design industry. After obtaining my degree in psychology, I realized that I wanted to pair my love of design with my passion for understanding people, creating spaces that identified culture and human experience. After spending 10 years in the design industry between New York and Naples, FL, I moved to Atlanta to get my MFA degree at Savannah College of Art and Design.
Having a strong family background in business, I decided to open Redefine Home in 2024, which focuses on interior design in a retail showroom environment. We currently offer interior design services and have curated our space to make consumers feel comfortable and confident. My goal is to create spaces that are meaningful and represent the clients personal aesthetic and story.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the road less traveled is never an easy road. I have had some really good and bad experiences that have taught me the meaning of hard work and trusting your gut. Having a family who ran a successful business was a big help, but I had to learn the ropes of an entirely different industry. The biggest challenge I have faced is knowing when to say yes, and when to say no, and knowing that it is okay to make mistakes. I believe that growth is fostered in learning how to do things in a different way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have worked in the interior design industry for over 15 years, developing a foundation for my design aesthetic and approach. I believe in creating dualities to represent timeless style which include; creative and analytical, masculine and feminine, modern and traditional and old with new. My designs focus on storytelling through richly textured spaces that are rooted in discovery and collaboration. With a background in psychology I am focused on creating designs that are meaningful. My passion for design comes from having traveled throughout the world uniting design styles that represent a personal reflection of my past, present and future. I am most proud of my ability to stay consistent to who I am and offer a design approach that is tailored to clients personal story. I love asking questions about where they grew up, where they have traveled and what they have experienced. It allows me to connect with them on a personal level and tie that back into the design of their home.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is that people are able to authentically be themselves and that they find something that brings them passion and joy. My dream is to be able to give back to others and build a business that can not only inspire, but mentor younger generations to feel confident in their ability to pursue their dreams.
