Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Barker
Hi Kristen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Once upon a time there was a little girl sneaking around to try all the makeup in her mom’s bathroom drawer…. I am the little girl. I can’t remember a time where glitz and glamour didn’t intrigue me. I have always loved the thought of feeling your best – and when I was little, probably around 10/11 I would watch makeup videos and then spend hours in front of the mirror “getting ready”. When I got older I realized everyone had different unique features and with makeup you could enhance those features, which I was obsessed with. Fast forward to when I was 22 I got a job at Dillards in the cosmetic department and I saw so many people come in and out for all types of events, trusting one person to make them feel their absolute best for that event. I wanted nothing more than to be that person for everyone I encountered. I worked there for several years connecting with so many other artists and making some long term friendships, until I felt the awful burn out of retail. I thought me quitting my makeup career because of my burnout in retail meant I was done for good … until my husband said “just go out on your own” and that is when “Barker Beauty” was born. I am now almost 5 years deep in my own business making connections and friends with almost every single one of my clients. I can’t tell you the happiness I feel when my clients re-book me – it’s like “wow” they love me just as much as I love them!!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would definitely not say it’s been a “smooth road” – anything worth having is worth working for! The makeup part is easy – I am in my happy place when I’m actually doing makeup. The hardest part or most difficult part for me was being vulnerable and putting my name out there even when there were so many talented artists in my area. Self doubt is the enemy, and I had to build my confidence up enough to where the self doubt was silenced.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to think I specialize in “hanging out”. I do makeup but when you’re in my chair – I wanna hear about your mom, her boyfriend, your kids, what happened at work, etc. and when I see you next I need all the updates!!
I’m most proud of the fact that I make people so comfortable- I also feel like this is what sets me apart from others. It does not matter if we have never met – by the end of your appointment we will be friends I promise!! I want people to come to me and feel at home and relaxed and not stressed about how they will look at the end and I feel as if I accomplish that with my skills.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I think ATL has so many opportunities! I think it’s a great space for artistic individuals who need inspiration – the city is beautiful and so are the people in it!
I think the thing I dislike the most about the city is how easy it is to get “lost” as an artist! Not lost in direction but “overseen”. I believe you have to stand out more and really put yourself out there since there are so many other artists around.
