Life & Work with Kym Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kym Williams.

Hi Kym, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In July 2020, our youngest child was dropped off for college in Philadelphia during civil unrest, a global pandemic and in a new city. My husband and I returned back home to an empty house if you don’t count our dog, Nola. Stressful to say the least. I suddenly had a lot of free time under quarantine and no where to channel it. I wanted to do something creative and saw a video of someone making earrings. I was instantly intrigued and ordered clay for delivery. It’s been a full year since I started playing around with clay and eventually starting my business. I’ve now quit my job and do this full time, What can I say, it’s been a wild ride and something really great that I love has grown out of a time that started out anything but joyful.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. In addition to learning the medium of polymer clay, I’ve also had to learn (on the fly) how retail works, branding, e-commerce. It’s been a lot at times. Many days of stop go, stop, pause, back up, start again but I always say my worst day doing THIS is still better than my best day in my old corporate job.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make earrings! Some are paired with gold plated brass, other pieces are 100% polymer clay. People are always so surprised that the earrings are clay. You can make it look like ANYTHING and they’re so light! I am prototyping necklaces and bracelets now as well. I eventually want to offer full collections. I’m most proud of my growth. I look back at old pieces when I first started and I’m excited about where I’m at right now and what’s to come as well. I’m known for sophisticated pieces with an organic vibe.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see handmade jewelry really being sought after even more than today. People love having original one of the kind art as jewelry. I see the industry growing for handmade creatives. More retail wanting handmade items and even big brands tapping into artists instead of manufactured pieces.
