Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakendra Ford.
Hi Lakendra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m an author, entertainer, and entrepreneur, but first, I’m a wife and a mother. I was raised between Brooklyn, New York and Connecticut, a child with a vivid imagination who found refuge and power in reading and writing. Words were my first language. By age eleven, they carried me into my first professional publication, and I never stopped listening to where they wanted to take me.
Music became the next chapter. I’ve been a signed artist, a professional background singer who toured internationally, and a songwriter whose work has lived in movie scores and commercial projects. For years, I was also a ghostwriter, creating behind the curtain, working deep within the industry through artist development, management, and radio promotion. I learned the business from the inside out, often unseen, always absorbing.
Then came A Maze in Ways. I say I wrote the book, but the truth is …felt like a spiritual download. As if I was chosen to receive it, to trust it, and to bring it to paper exactly as it arrived. From that moment, the full vision of The A Maze in Ways Project was born: the book, the soundtrack, the series, and the podcast. All I which interconnects about love, healing, and the paths we take to find ourselves.
That journey is now led by the debut single I wrote and perform as La!, titled “I Love You,” available January 11. For me, it’s more than a song. It is the emotional doorway into the world I’ve been building my entire life,
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While preparing to bring A Maze in Ways to fruition, I endured a series of profound emotional hardships that, at times, made it difficult to move forward. In recent years, I experienced the devastating loss of my loved ones one after another-including both of my parents; deeply challenged my ability to keep creating.
And if that weren’t enough, my six-year-old son suffered a nearly fatal accident, forcing our family to spend most of the year living in and out of Children’s Hospital. Yet even in the darkest moments, I witnessed the undeniable works of God,, through my son’s resilience, his strength to keep fighting, and the unwavering support of the people who surrounded us with love, prayer, and hope. I understand better now, than ever before, how life can be fleeing, and how it is each of our responsibilities to be good stewards to the gifts God gives to us, tor us and through us.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I build and restore houses for a living in Atlanta, but A Maze in Ways is me building a home. Because what is a home without love, joy—and sometimes healing and forgiveness? All of that lives within the pages of A Maze in Ways.
Though it is a work of fiction loosely inspired by the realities of sex trafficking, the story reaches far beyond a single issue. It explores family relationships, trauma, survival, healing, and the complicated paths we take back to ourselves.
The greatest reward of this journey has been twofold. First, feeling the presence and guidance of my grandmother and mother, who inspired me every step of the way. And equally powerful, hearing from women who survived sex trafficking; women who told me the story touched them deeply and reflected their emotional truth. That confirmation reminded me why this story had to be told.
While I can’t distinctly say what sets me apart from others, I can say what makes me most like others. I’m a spiritual being, maneuvering through this human experience, praying to live a life that brings more joy than pain. As a creative, I’m just bold enough to be vulnerable.
Words from the heart always speaks to the heart❤️
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Patience, obedience, and flexibility were all essential while building this project such as “ A Maze in Ways”. It required seeing, believing and working on the vision, dodging all the tricks of the enemy and quieting my mind to be able to hear what the next step should be.
