Life & Work with Legacy of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Legacy.

Hi Legacy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
MTV’s DJ Legacy is an accomplished dj and digital designer with a deep love for music. Legacy ‘aka Winston Williams’ has made a name for himself as a respected Open Format DJ, Experience Creator and Digital Designer. Born of Jamaican descent and groomed in American culture, DJ Legacy stays true to his roots by spinning an eclectic blend of Classic Hip Hop, RNB, Dancehall and Reggae. From his humble beings as the drummer at his parent’s church in the early 90s to his 10 career as the National Tour DJ for MTV, music is a big part of who he is. In 1996, DJ Legacy, began a journey to not only make it on the DJ scene but to break through. In 2002, his crew, the 5 Star Generals, began making a name for themselves on staple and underground Atlanta radio stations and the club circuit. Soon Legacy was being recognized for his individual abilities on the turntables that began earning him national attention. From the spring of 2003 to 2013, he was the National Tour DJ for MTV/mtvU and was featured on MTV’s “Making the Band Season Finale 3 & 4”, “Rock Paper Scissors”, and “Wild’N’Out” and continued to rock yearly MTV special events and tours such as Spring Break, VMA Tour, and Campus Invasion.

In an effort to redefine how audiences are entertained around the world, Legacy joined forces with DJ Rhythm as one-half of the Audio Junkeez. This connection has afforded them the opportunity to do many cool events and projects worldwide. Fresh Radio Show and Fresh Day Party are by-far two of the coolest experiences they have created together, with their Fresh Crew — Ash Marie, Jawz of Life and Producer Wes. Fresh Radio Show gives them the media outlet to share their brand of fun family-friendly music and programming. Fresh Day party gives them the in-person experience which allowed them to create a thriving community of like-minded music lovers.

Legacy is a dynamic force in the entertainment industry and DJ community, renowned for his passion for music preservation and community empowerment. Throughout his illustrious career, he has continually redefined audience engagement through innovative experiences and energetic performances.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My DJ journey has been a path of significant growth, filled with both challenges and triumphs. I feel incredibly fortunate to have reached a point where I can intentionally prioritize projects that truly fulfill me. While my vision may not align with everyone, I’ve found that when it does resonate, it creates a powerful and lasting connection.

One of the greatest hurdles in my DJ career has been balancing kindness with authority; too often, people mistake my professional courtesy for weakness. This has frequently left me dealing with copycats. While I’ve been told that imitation is the ultimate form of flattery, it feels different when others mimic the unique, personal experiences I’ve worked hard to create.

Reflecting on my career as a DJ, I feel incredibly fortunate. While there have been obstacles, the blessings have far outweighed the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve reached a point where I can remain authentic to my sound and DJ exactly the way I’ve always envisioned.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Q. What do you do, what do you specialize in?

A. Simply put i’m a DJ. I think of myself as a Hip Hop DJ. But most people think of me as a feel good DJ. I play what feels good.

Q. What are you known for?

A. I’m most known for being the DJ that DJed for MTV after Skribble from 2003 to 2013

Q. What are you most proud of?

A. While being MTV’s National Tour DJ was a career highlight, my true passion now lies with the Fresh Radio Show and the community we’ve built. ‘FRESH’ represents something deeply personal to me: a space where music lovers can unite to celebrate the sounds of the past and present that have shaped our lives.

Q. What sets you apart from others?

What truly sets me apart is my unique ability to both envision and execute creative ideas that deeply resonate with an audience.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
That’s in interesting question. Here is the thing, I don’t consider myself lucky… I consider myself ‘Blessed’. I’ve felt God’s hand on my life since I was a child, and I view every experience in my life and DJ career—the highs and the lows—as part of a greater plan. He has a way of placing me in the right rooms at the right time, and those ‘God-incidents’ have consistently elevated my journey. Through every triumph and every pitfall avoided, I see His guidance rather than random chance.
