Life & Work with Lenia Castro of Upper Westside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lenia Castro

Hi LENIA, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in a charming town called Alquízar, located about 40 km from the vibrant city of Havana. From a very young age, I developed a passion for visual arts, which led me to pursue studies in film, television, and radio direction. During that time, I had the opportunity to direct and produce some short films and documentaries, exploring stories that resonated with my community and culture.

In 2013, I decided to embark on a new adventure and moved to the United States. The adaptation process was quite a challenge, especially due to the language barrier, but I was fortunate to meet extraordinary people who gave me their unconditional support, helping me overcome every obstacle.

A year later, in 2014, my life took an unexpected turn when I partnered with another artist in a mural company. I started by designing and drawing murals, but I quickly took on a broader role, managing the overall operation of the company. It was a period of intense learning and growth, preparing me for what was to come.

In 2022, with a clear vision of creating something of my own, I founded Upper Westside Murals, a company that, thanks to the talent and dedication of an extraordinary team and the loyalty of our clients, has quickly established itself in the world of urban art. Today, our murals adorn the main streets of Atlanta and other cities across Georgia, transforming common spaces into canvases filled with life and inspiration.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest hurdles was financial. When I first started, I quickly realized that my savings weren’t enough to cover all the costs—supplies, labor, and marketing expenses added up fast. I had to work every day of the week because I couldn’t afford to hire more than one artist. Eventually, as I started getting more work, I was able to grow the team, and now I have three full-time artists working alongside me.
Another significant challenge has been dealing with unpredictable weather. We once spent weeks on an intricate mural, only to have it ruined by an unexpected stretch of rain followed by extreme heat.
But perhaps the most challenging obstacle has been burnout. The long hours, physical labor, and emotional toll of running a business on a tight budget began to wear me down. Over time, though, I’ve learned to find a better balance between my personal life and work.
In the end, these obstacles have shaped me into a stronger, more resilient artist and business owner. The murals we create aren’t just art; they’re symbols of the journey, of struggles overcome, and of a community that values creativity.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My company, Upper Westside Murals, specializes in creating vibrant, custom murals that transform spaces into dynamic works of art. Our focus is on hand-painted designs that bring creativity and personality to various environments, whether it’s a business, public space, or private residence. We’re known for our attention to detail and our ability to collaborate closely with clients to bring their visions to life.
One of the aspects we’re most proud of is the strong connection we build with the community and clients through our work. Our murals not only enhance spaces but also engage and inspire people. We’ve completed projects in several cities across Georgia, including Atlanta, where our work has become a recognizable part of the local landscape.
What sets us apart is our commitment to both artistic excellence and client satisfaction. We take pride in our ability to deliver high-quality, unique murals while maintaining a collaborative approach with our clients. Our team of talented artists brings diverse skills and perspectives, ensuring that each project is executed with creativity and precision.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Ah, risk-taking—it’s like adding a splash of bold color to a canvas, never quite knowing how it will turn out, but always hoping it will make a statement. In the world of mural art, risk is often intertwined with creativity. One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was in the early days of Upper Westside Murals. I invested a significant portion of my savings into a high-profile project that seemed both thrilling and daunting. The mural was for a prominent midtown location, and the budget was tight. There was no guarantee of success, but I believed in the vision and the potential impact of the artwork. That leap of faith paid off, not only in financial terms but also in the credibility and exposure it brought to our company. Another major risk involved working on large-scale murals from swing stages. Picture this: high above the ground, suspended from scaffolding, with every brushstroke requiring precision and focus. It’s an exhilarating experience, but it comes with its own set of challenges and hazards. Balancing safety with artistry, managing the logistics of working at such heights, and ensuring the quality of the work—all while the wind sways the platform—has tested our team’s resilience and skill. Despite the inherent risks, these projects have allowed us to create truly breathtaking pieces and pushed the limits of what we can achieve. I view risk as a crucial ingredient in the creative process. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the uncertainty that comes with pursuing something extraordinary. While it can be nerve-wracking, it’s often where the most exciting opportunities lie. Taking risks has taught me that growth and innovation are often found on the other side of fear.
So, while I may not always feel like a daring adventurer, I’ve learned that calculated risks—whether investing in a major project or painting from a swing stage—are essential to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and making a meaningful impact.
