Today we’d like to introduce you to Letia Scales Young.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In January 2001, I created E-MODE, Inc as a possible Fashion magazine/modeling agency for people of color. I graduated with a BFA in Advertising Design from the University of West Georgia. But it wasn’t later, after receiving my AA in Fashion Marketing Degree from American Intercontinental University with a concentration in Image Consulting and becoming a Certified Image & Wardrobe Consultant, my ideas evolved and so did the premise of what E-MODE, Inc should be. Later in 2001, E-MODE, Inc. in association with Link’s Network created “Evolution of Black Fashion” at Clark Atlanta University where we presented with six Black designers a Charity Fashion showcase.
Fast forward to 2004, when I made my debut in front of the camera with a style & image consulting feature in “The Limited” Company (Wardrobe Training Video) which enhanced my career. This feature also resulted in an interview with Atlanta Magazine giving them a behind the scenes look into my image consulting business!
In 2007, I was approached by Georgia Power by their AABE Organization to present an Image & Wardrobing “Presenting your Best Self” workshop. Through this presentation, I was able to show how your look and professional image influence the perception of others within the corporate world. I provided tips on visual success, career wardrobe, the total look, and physique basics. Stigmas and stereotypes were lifted on certain styles, and new ideas blossomed on how to promote yourself and still maintain your diverse sense of fashion. I would like to give special thanks to Travis Bell, Mary Cantrell, Marcia Dore, Valerie Harris, Kami Jeff and Greg Kendrick who modeled various clothing styles during an image presentation held at the event. This opportunity provided me the chance to showcase how E-MODE, Inc. can assist you in taking a look from smart casual to standout style.
In 2010, after accepting an invitation to New York Fashion Week to view designer Cynthia Steffe’s Fall 2011 Collection, I was interviewed by (NYC Fashion Week) NY1 News, DNAinfo, and Manhattan Local News regarding my views on the fashion show!
The following year (2011), after receiving a call from a record company to style Neo-Soul R & B Artist Angie Stone for her Rich Girl Album, I served as her personal image & wardrobe stylist for about a year! Not only did I style Ms. Stone for her album cover and promotions, I also styled and wardrobed her other projects which included “Verses & Flow” 2011 on TV One, “Black is Beautiful Tour 2011 with Raheem DeVaughn, and several other personal appearances and events.
Additionally in 2011, I presented an Image Seminar for TWE Price Waterhouse similar to the Georgia Power presentation given earlier. Through my expertise, I was able to present tips on creating fashion looks to take you from the office to after hours with ease and style. I included pointers on color, pattern, and texture to enhance your career wardrobe while staying true to your perfect fit and style.
A once in a lifetime opportunity presented itself in 2014 when I was invited to Fashion Week in Paris! I attended two fashion shows & events specifically those of French Designer Gosia Baczynska (Collection S/S 2015) & Devastee Collection (S/S 2015). While there, I was able to engage with the Paris Fashion Industry and returned to the US with new and cutting-edge French Designer Collection pieces to present to my clients.
I currently serve as the Image & Wardrobe Consultant for LaShae Primus who is presently filming a new reality show for Bravo Network scheduled for release in March 2022. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, I often engaged in virtual styling sessions with my client continuously building her image and personal style while keeping her branding & image intact.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I would honestly say that the road to where I am now has been an ageless adventure. I’ve learned so much about myself and my true potential. Among the struggles, I’ve endured along the way would be me finding a way to stand out initially because this industry was so saturated with potential fashion fashionistas. When the market crashed around 2008, many upper echelon designers were suffering financially as the shopping habits of their clients quickly changed. My personal shopping & styling business began to haunt me at times as the volume of business slowed. I began working luxury retail to establish a better clientele. This is where my business started to pick up and I chose a different path – that of being an Influencer & Brand Ambassador! I had worked for CÈLINE as a Brand Ambassador (when Phoebe Philo was the Creative Designer of CÈLINE) in SAKS Fifth Avenue Atlanta. This is where I learned what it truly meant to be a Brand Ambassador for a Luxury Designer and where I consistently developed numerous professional selling strategies and enhanced my skills in a managerial role.
Throughout this process, I demonstrated an exceptional record of great, personalized customer service while utilizing my styling and wardrobe expertise providing the client with the complete CÈLINE Experience from head-to-toe. I built an impressive women’s clientele in a short period of time, and it continued to grow every month which resulted in an increase of sales for the business. I have built relationships with buyers and executive teams to help effectively communicate and cultivate new ideas into reality for the CÈLINE boutique. In 2015, I got married and my last named changed to Young. I’ve always had my initials either embroidered or engraved on everything – that trait was handed down from my father who goes by the initials (HTS). However, now my initials became LSY and this changed everything! It helped me to later launch “The-LSY” which is now my signature tagline. In 2019, the birth of my son Sir (Kenton Brock Young) a couple of years later gave me new desires to really pursue my dreams! He’s now my inspiration and the motivation that keeps me going!
New Beginnings
This vision has been with me most of my adult life. I worked my way through college with my fashion sense in tow and never looked back. In 2013, I had a lightbulb moment! This is where my fashion journey would take hold and I started a style blog where I could showcase my looks and share opinions of beauty, fashion, & style. The LSY STYLE Blog & YouTube channel were created to share my fashion sense and creativity. I wanted a way to connect with my audience on a more social level and get feedback through different media outlets within the fashion world. From that point, my dream has grown across the US & the world. From those humble beginnings, my dreams have become a reality and I LOVE living this dream!
BEAUTY, FASHION, & STYLE
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Certified Image Consultant where I assist clients in developing their own individual personal style by finding the best looks in color analysis, makeup analysis and wardrobe analysis.
I am most proud of servicing my clients through personal shopping & image consulting. I love it when a client loves something I brought them, or when they wear something out that I styled, and it gets compliments. That brings me great satisfaction. My work that I’m most proud of is styling Neo R&B Soul Artist Angie Stone because she got so much recognition from the TV One “Verses & Flow” that she starred on R& B Divas the next year!
What sets me apart from others is maybe my way of styling. It’s not so outlandish but I get my clients involved so they don’t seem uncomfortable with their look. I teach them how understand their personal style and overall look. I want them to experience comfort without compromising their personal style!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Yes, of course! My advice would be to figure out what you love and do just that! If you love what you’re doing, it doesn’t feel like a job and the money will come. I would say to never be afraid to learn from others during the process as well! I wish I would’ve started much earlier and never stopped. Life happens and it teaches you lessons that you would have never learned until you’ve experienced it! I’m just glad this talent & love for fashion that I have never went away. After all, fashion is in my soul!
