Life & Work with Leyland Trent of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leyland Trent.

Hi Leyland, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Poetry found me in my early teen years and became the foundation of my creative expression. I was active in the early meta art world, where I built a strong following and forged meaningful artistic connections. As I entered my later teens, I expanded my horizons by attending exclusive events and immersing myself in artistic and intellectual spaces. These gatherings weren’t just about networking—they became learning grounds. I observed, listened, and analyzed how people carried conversations, and one question always seemed to come up: “Well, what do you do?”

For a long time, I’d answer, “I’m a writer,” but had nothing tangible to show for it. That realization pushed me to dig deeper into my passion and purpose. In 2019, I released my first poetry book—a meaningful start to something greater. Since then, I’ve grown immensely, and today, I’m actively working on three new projects, all rooted in poetry and personal evolution.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey of writing and artistry is rarely a smooth one. For many poets, the path is marked by a constant negotiation between creative passion, financial realities, and personal well-being. This tension is a common thread in the lives of writers who strive to balance their artistic pursuits with the demands of everyday life.

Financial instability is a significant challenge for poets, especially me. As noted by The Poetry Foundation, “publishing poetry often proves to be a break-even venture at best, making it difficult for poets to sustain themselves financially through their art alone.” This economic pressure leads me to make difficult choices between pursuing creative work and meeting basic needs.

Moreover, the capitalist framework within which art is produced and consumed can be at odds with the spirit of creativity. Writers/ Poets, like myself, have understood that capitalism has influenced the arts. We see more artists or those considered artist meeting the needs of the meta vers or fans rather then creating beautiful bodies of work.

Beyond economic concerns, the emotional and spiritual aspects of writing pose their own challenges. Writing poetry is not merely about putting words on a page; it’s a deeply introspective process that requires emotional labor and vulnerability. The act of writing can be a means of exploring and manifesting one’s inner life, but it also demands a level of self-examination that can be taxing.

Despite these hurdles, the impact of writing in my life has been profound. Poetry serves as a tool for conveying philosophy, communicating feelings, and fostering understanding among individuals. It is a form of knowledge that empowers both the writer and the reader, offering insights into the human experience. While retaining and expressing this knowledge is not always easy, its influence is enduring, shaping perspectives and inspiring change.

The road of artistry and poetry is fraught with challenges; financial, emotional, and existential. Yet, it is through navigating these struggles that writers find their voice and purpose, contributing to the rich tapestry of human expression.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc.?

I am a poet and writer whose journey began in my early teens, finding solace and expression through poetry. My work delves into themes of identity, spirituality, and the interplay between art and society. Having been active in the early stages of the meta art world, I cultivated a substantial following and forged meaningful artistic connections. My writing is characterized by its introspective nature and its ability to resonate with diverse audiences.

What are you most proud of?

In 2019, I released my first poetry book, marking a significant milestone in my artistic journey. While I view it as a starting point, it represents my commitment to my craft and my willingness to share my voice with the world. I’m currently working on three new projects that continue to explore and expand upon my poetic expressions.

What sets you apart from others?

What distinguishes me as a writer is my deep emotional intelligence and expansive perspective. I possess an innate ability to connect with a wide array of stories and expressions, allowing me to find resonance even in narratives vastly different from my own. This empathetic approach enables me to craft introspective works that delve into the complexities of human experience.

Being comfortable with the possibility of being misunderstood has granted me the freedom to explore themes that are often considered taboo or challenge societal norms. I aim to give voice to cultures and identities seeking representation, creating space for dialogue and reflection. My writing doesn’t shy away from discomfort; instead, it embraces it as a catalyst for growth and understanding.

In essence, my work stands out because it bridges empathy with inquiry, inviting readers to confront and contemplate the unspoken facets of our shared humanity.
