Life & Work with London Wheeler of Lithonia

Today we’d like to introduce you to London Wheeler.

Hi London, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Dr. London Calling in 2020 during a time when trust in medicine was wavering and misinformation was everywhere. People didn’t know who to turn to for reliable health information, and I also noticed something deeper which was many minorities didn’t see themselves represented in medicine. That lack of visibility can make healthcare feel distant and unattainable.

As a first-generation medical student, I personally understood what it feels like to navigate this journey without guidance or a roadmap. I had to learn much of the process on my own, and I realized there were so many others who felt just as lost.

So I created this platform to meet people where they are, providing education, hope, and resources to both patients and future physicians. I share practical health information, wellness tips, and also mentorship content for students who aspire to enter medicine but don’t know where to start.

My ultimate goal with Dr. London Calling is to bridge gaps in healthcare through representation, education, and empowerment, helping communities feel seen, informed, and supported while encouraging everyone to live longer, healthier lives.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey hasn’t been smooth, and building Dr. London Calling has come with its fair share of challenges. Early on, I dealt with technical issues with my laptop and limited access to equipment. As a medical student who isn’t able to work, affording professional-grade tools or software simply wasn’t an option, so I learned to create with what I had.

Another challenge has been finding physicians willing to participate. My vision has always been to amplify diverse medical voices, but in today’s climate, many professionals are understandably hesitant to appear on platforms or speak publicly. That made outreach slower and required persistence.

On top of that, I’ve been creating and posting content while navigating the demands of medical school. Staying consistent hasn’t always been easy between studying, rotations, and exams, but I made a commitment to show up for my community even on the busiest days. I also had to teach myself editing, content creation, and how to reach my audience effectively, skills I never expected to learn alongside medicine.

There were moments of frustration, but each obstacle pushed me to become more resourceful, resilient, and intentional about my mission. Despite everything, I stayed committed because I believe deeply in what this platform represents. Every post, every conversation, and every person reached reminds me why I started: to create access, representation, and trustworthy education while helping bridge gaps in healthcare and empowering people to live longer, healthier lives.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Currently, I am a fourth-year medical student applying to pediatric residency, with a passion for caring for children and supporting families through some of their most vulnerable moments. I’m known for my compassion, strong work ethic, and commitment to serving my community, values that guide both my clinical journey and my work through Dr. London Calling.

What I’m most proud of is Dr. London Calling and the impact it’s had on viewers, whether that’s helping someone better understand their health, inspiring a student to pursue medicine, or reminding someone that they are seen and supported. Building something meaningful while navigating medical school has been incredibly rewarding.

What sets me apart is my resilience. I’ve continued to show up despite limited resources, technical challenges, and the demands of training , even while navigating the loss of my mother. Experiencing grief while pursuing medicine deepened my empathy and strengthened my purpose. Being a first-generation medical student taught me how to push forward without a blueprint, and that perseverance shows up in everything I do. I lead with compassion, purpose, and persistence, and I carry those values with me as I move toward becoming a pediatrician.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I truly have the best village. First and foremost, I give credit to God for placing this vision in my heart and giving me the strength to walk it out.

My family has been an incredible source of support, especially my late mother, who encouraged me to start this platform and even shared her own story about patient advocacy before she passed. Her belief in this mission continues to motivate me every day.

I’m also grateful for my friends who stepped in when I needed help the most ; Blake, who created my logo, and Michaela, who edited one of my videos when my system shut down. Their support reminded me that this journey doesn’t have to be walked alone.

I owe so much to my classmates, mentors, colleagues, and the physicians I’ve met along the way who were willing to share their stories and lend their voices to the platform. And finally, my friend Nya, who encourages me daily and consistently reminds me of my purpose.

Each person played a unique role in helping Dr. London Calling grow, and I’m deeply thankful for a community that believes in me and this mission.
