Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Miller.
Hi Luis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Well, I was born and raised in CT and at 20 yrs young, I moved to The Big City, New York. I worked as a Pharmacy Technician & Salon receptionist. Later to figure out Pharmacy was SO NOT for me. I began full time as a salon front desk coordinator, which inspired me to continue that journey and go to Cosmetology School. I graduated in 2012 and have been grateful for my journey ever since. My Atlanta story came later in 2019, with an Instagram follow from an Atlanta-based stylist & part-salon owner named Jessica Wright, who would later become a best friend of mine. She was working an event in New York City that happened to take place at the salon I work in, in Soho, NYC. We instantly connected and she then introduced the idea of guest artisting at her salon, Melrose & McQueen in Atlanta. At first, I was so nervous leaving my busy schedule here in New York for a weekend in Atlanta… would I be booked enough to compensate the cost of travel? Would I be able to build a name & clientele there for myself? Would it be worth it? So many questions, but having her by my side & full support, I knew she wouldn’t steer me wrong. Next thing I know, a couple of cocktails later, I was booked for a weekend in Atlanta where I was completely stacked with back-to-back haircuts as our collab began. It’s now been over three years of traveling back and forth, further building our friendship, work relationship and trusted clientele that have been such a blessing, I am constantly thankful for.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was a pretty smooth road for the most part. Having been in the hair industry since 2012, it’s not without its struggles, especially living in New York City, building that clientele and living the lifestyle we strive to live. My biggest struggle was trying to find that “work, life balance” that I think many of us struggle with. I would sometimes take on way too many projects and commitments that I began to burn myself out, even traveling was work-related. When is it beneficial to your mind & body to say no? I guess you can say I’m still learning the “work smarter, not harder” mentality but I’m happy to say I am very lucky to be surrounded by a tremendous amount of supportive friends and family, including those in the beauty industry that I can always lean on for help.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Well, as I said before being in the hair industry since 2012, it’s only really been within the last five years I would say, that I’ve really found my niche behind & away from the chair as a Great Lengths Extension Specialist, Educator & Brand Elite member. Which I have become mostly known for my extension makeovers & most proud to share my creative knowledge with others, teaching and certifying all over the East Coast. I’d like to believe that my skills in color matching, cutting & extension applications, along with my honest personality are what set me apart from others…at least I think that’s what most would say.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Probably the fact that, believe it or not get super nervous when doing live interviews and public speaking! I don’t ever shut up at work, so I’m sure most would be surprised about that, hahaha!
