Life & Work with Lynnay Della Luce of Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynnay Della Luce

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to the Atlanta area from the Northeast in 2009. I was 27 and had a goal to do music professionally. I was tired of working jobs that drained me and gave me no satisfaction. I worked diligently and learned as many songs as I possibly could on the guitar, bass, and worked everyday to become a better vocalist. I started out running local open mics so I could meet new people, network, and hone in on my craft. From there that led me to musicians who needed band members and I started getting jobs. With each band experience I learned and took in as much information as I could. Eventually I had the confidence to run my own band. In 2016 Vices of Vanity was born. After years of playing covers I decided it was time to write my own music again. I teamed up with Amy Epperley (bass) and Hunter Cook (drums) and we started to write songs together. I always had this idea that I wanted Vices to grow with the listener and touch upon life subjects. Our first releases were about rebellion and partying. I wanted to relate to the audience in a fun way then as we matured as a band we would start to push on bigger topics. We started writing new material that was more on the philosophical side. As we were trying to figure out a strategy on how to record and release our new set of songs Covid happened. Being that all three members were full-time musicians it hit us really hard. We didn’t all have the luxury of taking the time off to finish the process. We needed to get back out and gig with our cover projects and figure out how we were going to pay our bills, not putting money into recording and marketing. We also didn’t know what was going on with the industry so everything was put on hold. Fast forward to now…after years of doing cover songs we have come up with a unique style. We have decided to release cover versions of these songs as well as finally recording our next batch of originals under the Vices of Vanity name. We can start this process because I’ve been working on recording and production for a few years now. During some of my down time I started to get back into the process so we could release more songs and save money. I went to school for audio engineering in New York City when I got out of College so I had a strong foundation to build on. Throughout this whole time I also learned how to do guitar looping so I could preform as a one woman band and I also own a t-shirt company so I can make my own merchandise. I am very excited to unveil this next chapter in my musical journey!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Each struggle for me was a lesson. If I was hired for a band and we had a bad show or experience, I accessed the situation to figure out WHY and I learned how to prevent those things in the future. If a band didn’t work out, I figured it was for the best and something better was out there for me. Covid was the biggest struggle but I took the time to dig into guitar looping and ramping up my solo acoustic show, which made me a better, more confident guitar player because everything was me and if i messed something up by a millisecond, you could tell. The biggest thing with challenges is that you learn what you DO NOT want. Sometimes we don’t know exactly what we want or how things are going to turn out, but by knowing what we do NOT want, that still gives us power to make decisions and move forward towards what we DO want.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My main focus is singing and playing guitar. This has been my living for almost 15 years now. I am known for a powerful, raspy Joan Jett style voice. I’ve always loved rock n roll so when I do my cover songs they have this element of edginess. I put this extra punch in that honestly comes naturally. When I combine that with the guitar skills I have learned along the way it makes for an interesting combination. It’s very rare now-a-days to see me with another guitar player. I play all of my leads and sing over riffs. I haven’t seen many woman able to hold their own singing, playing lead guitar, while also running sound at the same time. I learned how to do as much as I could and I hope that inspires others to go out there and do it too. It is a cliche but it’s true for a reason, you can do anything you put your mind to. I learned how to layer my guitar through looping/recording techniques live on stage and do a one woman show because sometimes I couldn’t have a band (especially after Covid). Learning how to do all of that made me so proud because it wasn’t easy! I always wanted to do it and finally I stopped making excuses and started putting time into it. Little by little I made progress and now I am so happy with the outcome of my efforts. I have about 30+ songs that I can loop and layer (like how Ed Sheeran does his live shows). It’s all about making small steps. You can have the bigger picture in mind but each little task you can do, that brings you closer to what excites you, is worth doing. When I look back at all these little baby steps and see the massive mountain I’ve climbed, I can’t help but proud of my accomplishments especially because I did it for me.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
There are so many people have have helped me and supported me along my journey. I’ve had friends, family, and mentors all along the way. It was incredible the amount of support I received when I came to Atlanta. This community is amazing and so special and I am so thankful to be a part of it.
