Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Ayers
Hi Mackenzie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started making jewelry for fun ever since I discovered RainbowLoom as a kid. Then I started making beaded bracelets and necklaces in high school, this later caught the attention of my peers and they started asking me to make them jewelry for money. After I had sold some pieces to my classmates, I made an Instagram account and a website. My pieces have only gotten better now that I’ve graduated high school- I went from giving people jewelry in between classes to mailing to countries like Canada, Poland, and the UK.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My small jewelry business has had its ups and downs, mostly ups. However, I’ve struggled with making a consistent income or some of my pieces breaking along the way. In highschool, there were a few people who would poke fun and call me “macaroni noodle necklace girl”..which was a little ridiculous and funny looking back. I also dealt with some drama involving other girls trying to start selling jewelry too, other students would unnecessarily compare us and it made things really awkward.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make jewelry out of new and repurposed materials. Currently, I’ve gone viral on instagram reels for making necklaces out of vintage buttons. I think something that sets me apart from others is that I make things that appeal to a variety of different aesthetics or types of people. I also understand that financial stability is a thing of the past for most people so I offer a wide range of pricing options that anyone can afford- my $6 copper rings to my $40 stainless steel necklaces for example.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think being patient is the most important key to my success story. Each piece of jewelry I make consists of many tiny parts and can be quite tedious.
