Life & Work with Marsalis James of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marsalis James.

Hi Marsalis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am from Wilson, NC. Ended up attending college at The Illustrious,WSSU. I moved to Charlotte and started out as an event promoter in Charlotte, NC. Along the way, some friends and I started our nonprofit. Centered on giving back to those from low socioeconomic areas. I have been doing events independently since 2018. I started back up right after covid in 2021. Both are going well. I just expanded both areas into Atlanta and things are going well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. From self-inflicted situations to normal life happenings, there have definitely been highs and lows. I am grateful and not done with the process of being where I want to be yet!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an Hospitality Specialist/Event Planner. I specialize in day parties, mental health advocacy events, and I am in the non-profit space as well. It is a 501c3. We have been feeding the homeless, amongst other things for over 10 years. I have started those efforts in Atlanta as well. For my events,

I am most proud of being consistent in multiple spaces and not being boxed in. Continuing to grow and create safe and fun spaces for people to enjoy. I love to make a positive impact in both the event and nonprofit spaces alike.

What sets me apart is my ability to be personable. I think I have a very relationship oriented lifestyle and I value having equity in people. It makes the community become what it is and community to me is key to my efforts.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans are to continue to help evolve Big Wave Family into what we want it to be. While getting FatNdaHat into more of the festival and large event space.
