Today we’d like to introduce you to Masy.
Hi MASY., so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I began releasing music during my senior year of high school. I had been making beats since 8th grade (not really getting serious until later 9th/10th) and I was writing poetry in middle and high school. I decided to try my hand at writing my own songs over my beats and sharing them starting with my first release in September 2020.
I spent some time in college at Howard University as a film major while still releasing music projects. I enjoyed my college experience overall, but I got into a headspace where I felt strongly about focusing on my creative aspirations instead of spending time in school. I didn’t enjoy being a student anymore. Truthfully, I hadn’t enjoyed being a student for a while up to that point. I felt I knew what I wanted to spend my time pursuing. I didn’t return for my second year.
My first project after deciding to leave school was my EP, red. a couple of days before my 19th birthday. This EP had 5 songs including my song “Hypnotized.” About a month after I put it out, an R&B influencer by the handle @gendirectmusic highlighted that song on his social media pages and that brought a lot of new listeners to my music.
Soon after, “Hypnotized” hit a million streams and now sits at 4 million on Spotify. I really don’t know how he found the song, but I’m incredibly grateful. This only further solidified in my mind that this is a path more than worth following. Some singles, another EP, and an album release bring us to where I am today. I have my second self-produced album, INDIGO., coming out on March 19.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As you can imagine, leaving school to live in my mom’s house as a full-time musician was not an ideal situation for my parents, especially because I had been doing well in school up until college. Also, being an independent artist isn’t exactly lucrative from the jump, so I could understand their initial pushback.
My parents are supportive of me, thankfully, but at that time I couldn’t help but feel like I had the weight of the world on my back. Even beyond the financial picture, I felt the weight of my own mind. There were many times I felt doubt about the decision I made. I’ve been out of school for about two years now.
While there are still some moments of feeling doubt, I’ve grown so much as a person and as an artist by honing in on what I love, and have learned that there is no limit to what I can do with my passions. That being said, I am still an independent artist currently managing myself. There is definitely a ton of room to grow. The difference is now I feel more ready than ever to grow in the ways I need.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a singer-songwriter and producer. I tend to blend a variety of sound choices into my songs so I would describe myself as a genre-less artist, but I do lean favorably into alternative R&B. So far, I have independently produced and released around 50 songs spread across 6 EPs and an album on streaming services since starting in 2020. My most listened-to song is “Hypnotized” with over 4 million streams on Spotify.
I’d say what sets me apart the most is the way I mix my music. I aim to create soundscapes that are new and distinct with emotive songwriting to keep a listener coming back for more. I feel my music with my whole body and I hope I’m creating that immersive experience for anyone else who hears it.
