Today we’d like to introduce you to Mecca Wy’Asia.
Hi Mecca, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My parents are both musically inclined and have always had me involved in music since I was a child. I was heavily active in school/state choirs, church choirs, and my parents even had me in the studio as a baby. So I believe that ignited me to record my own music today. It’s always been in my blood
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve dealt with a lot being an artist. You have to have a thick skin in this line of work, because people are either going to gravitate towards you or they’re not. You may have a show, and it may seem like no one is rocking with your music, but you have to have that confidence in yourself, or otherwise you’ll crumble. I’ve just learned that I can only be me, and that’s more than enough.
I’ve also worked with individuals who I thought had my best interest and actually didn’t. My advice for that would be to just keep going. There’s always another way, and if God forbid your music gets lost along the way, don’t ever be afraid to start over. Sometimes, the record will come out better than it was before.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My name is Mecca Wy’Asia and I’m a singer/songwriter from Virginia Beach. I now reside in Jacksonville, FL, and I’ve been here spreading my music for 10 years now. I’m currently a part of a band called “NEO-RADIO”. I’m so grateful for the band, because it’s been helping me sharpen my performance skills.
I’m most proud of my resilience. I’ve just recently dropped an album called HABITUAL LOVER. Through that process, I was dealing with a break up, eviction, in between jobs, lost music, and just life. Have you ever broken up with someone who had all of your music? Wouldn’t recommend, I understand now more than ever that you have to keep business a part from personal. Shit just gets messy.
I was Ubering to the studio almost every day for 3 months straight. I believe I took my album to a total of 5 producers. And 2 out of the 5 dropped the ball. I was determined, and I will always look back at that time and be proud of the strength and the resilience I sustained to be able to get my music out.
What does success mean to you?
Success requires determination and consistency. Which is something I still have to work on. My definition of success is not having to stress about money. As cliché as that sounds, money rules the world. It’s unfortunate, but true. I just want to get to a place to where I can make a living off of what I love. I don’t want to work for anybody. I want to work for myself.
