Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Briscoe
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2021, I developed a severe multiple sclerosis flare. Long story short, it took three years to work to heal physically, mentally, and emotionally. I went through many changes in my work & personal life and had to accept my new shortcomings. As I came back to myself, my priorities changed, and I wanted to take the step to do something I had often dreamed about but never thought I could seriously undertake. Open a bookstore.
I took the plunge, and in a feverish month of researching, acquiring inventory, and trudging through the paperwork of starting a business, my little shop began to take form. There isn’t another bookstore in the immediate area of Calhoun, and I received enthusiastic support from the community.
The shop has taken on its own life. I wanted a cozy, quirky place where customers could feel comfortable browsing a maze of bookcases and discover unexpected things, and I think I am very much there.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been smooth. I must deal with my health considerations and pace myself when I want to go full tilt. I still work remotely for my previous job and need the financial support that that provides. My shop supports itself, but all of the extra profit goes to adding more inventory. I have been blessed to discover a few helpful mentors along the way, but I have had to do a lot of research and networking myself to build things from scratch. It’s a lot of physical and mental labor. No one teaches you how to be a bookstore owner, and you have to feel your way along.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I was a corpsman in the U.S. Navy and have worked professionally as a pharmacy tech on the civilian side. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. I hold a second-degree black belt in taekwondo and am active in the local dojang. I am not from Georgia; I was born and raised in Michigan and also played hockey. I curate many of my books based on my past and have a diverse selection in my shop. I am also starting a reptile rescue to support, educate, and rehome local animals.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I have tried to foster a sense of community for everyone who comes by the shop. I encourage people to talk about their favorite books and hobbies. Many of my customers have their own small businesses in varying fields, and we are passionate about supporting each other. Calhoun sometimes feels disconnected and I have been delighted to observe many personal and business relationships forming between customers in my shop.
