Today we’d like to introduce you to Miguel Figueroa.
Miguel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a comedy fan my whole life and eventually ended up studying and performing improv, starting in 2016. Back in 2019, after selling a rental property, I was looking for another investment opportunity. I found this little storefront, which I figured I would rent as an office or retail space. I rented the space for classes and had a few weekend shows on a bare-bones stage. A tenant was never found. We scheduled more classes and more shows, then Covid hit. We rented the space to warehouse some goods for self-taping, as a vintage clothing store, and for private classes. Slowly we were able to schedule shows and offer workshops, which is where we find ourselves.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a very rocky road, with all the different Covid waves and my lack of experience managing a space such as this. A few friends have helped with volunteering work and others with financial support. Luckily we’ve been able to stay afloat and to continue growing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m mostly known for my work as a medical interpreter, now in my 8th year in a hospital after 12 years as an agency interpreter.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
There is no specific piece of media I can recommend or credit. I studied economics in college and have recently started studying stoicism, so I follow a variety of blogs and YouTube channels on those subjects. This type of business is notoriously bad for financial gain, but studying economics has helped me be objective and fluid in my business decisions. Stoicism has helped me with the emotional highs and lows of starting a new hobby, mostly during a pandemic, which I’d love to turn into my full-time profession. But I would be amiss if I didn’t mention all the help, teachings, and support I have received from local comedy leaders Mark Kendall, Jon Carr, Ian Covell, Josh Warren, and Neetol Rahmen. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
