Today we’d like to introduce you to Milton Davis.
Hi Milton, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began writing seriously in 2005, twenty years ago, and began publishing in 2008. Since that time I’ve written over 30 books and published over sixty total, including anthologies and books by other authors. My stories and books have been nominated for awards around the world, and I’ve received a few, such as the 2022 East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2024 ConCarolinas Polaris Award, and the 2024 DeepSouth Con Phoenix Award for my contributions to Southern fandom. My stories have been included in various speculative fiction anthologies, most notably Slay: Stories of the Vampire Noire and Black Panther: Tales of Wakanda. I’m currently working on a number of new novels and animation projects and I hope to enter the indie film arena in the near future.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been an interesting journey, mostly positive. Being an indie author twenty years ago carried a negative stigma, but that’s mostly dissipated as the industry has shifted and people realize that indie doesn’t mean inferior. Being an indie author also means being an entrepreneur, which brings its own challenges. But the creative freedom I have and the books and projects that have resulted from it has been well worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I write most Black Speculative Fiction based on African/African Diaspora history, culture, and traditions. I write in various genres, but I’m most known for Sword and Soul, which is Sword and Sorcery based on African history and culture; and my anthologies, most notably my Funk! anthology series. I’m most proud of my Changa’s Safari series, which combines my two favorite things; fantasy and history. What sets me apart from other authors? I think it would be my focus on African/African diaspora based writing and the freedom to create what I want when I want.
