Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadia Beauvil.
Hi Nadia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
First and foremost, I am a wife, a mother to three amazing boys, and an in-home daycare owner and provider to little humans since 2016. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a creative person. I’m self-taught when it comes to crochet, cross-stitch, and making jewelry. I used to make my family and friends gifts for their birthdays and for the holidays and I would get so happy because I didn’t have to go buy a gift from the store. Growing up, I remember how hard my mom had to work to provide for me and my three sisters. She would work her regular job and on the weekends she would go to different markets to sell merchandise and I would always tag along back when I was a freshman in high school in 2004 when I lived in West Palm Beach, Florida. I just remember seeing so many people selling a variety of items and little did I know I would be selling my handmade crafts many years later.
It wasn’t until the spring of 2020 during the pandemic when everyone needed to stay home and quarantine, that I got the idea to just find something to keep myself busy. I ended up reaching out to a couple of my friends, Emmanuela and Rhonda because they are crafters and I wanted some input. They were so kind to advise me on everything I needed to get started. After doing a little bit of my own research, less than a week later, I decided to buy a Cricut machine. The very first project I did was bridal party shirts and wedding favors for my sister’s wedding. After a couple of months, I had a garage sale which was more of a mini Craft Expo. Nonetheless, it was a success and it was then that I decided that this can really be something to pursue and that was the beginning of Boss Mama Kreations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a small business owner, I can tell you what a lot of people don’t realize is that when you decide to start a business, it will take time to thrive. It’s like a plant and you have to water it regularly in order for it to grow. It’s just as the saying goes, you have to learn to crawl before you’re able to eventually walk then run. Creating and starting Boss Mama Kreations was just like that.
It’s a process, it takes time and you have to go through each obstacle, trial, and milestone before you can get to where God wants you to be. Just the amount of work that went into designing the website and trying my best to promote it through social media and finally getting that first customer to make a purchase was a strenuous but worthwhile endeavor. As I mentioned before I own an in-home daycare called Blessed Hands Daycare in Powder Springs, GA. When I first started out, I had just given birth to my first child in August 2016 and it took nine months before that business started to flourish. After that experience with my main business years prior, I was ready and patient for any adversity that I would face with BMK.
One of the struggles along the way that I face is the work-life balance of juggling my business life along with my family life. I don’t want to take time away from my family and yet everything I’m doing is for them since my nights are spent crafting and most of my weekends are spent away from them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Boss Mama Kreations specializes in handmade custom epoxy tumblers, keychains, pens and other resin art. The thought of making someone happy and seeing the reaction on their face when they see my work is one reason why I love what I do. Making things and showing off my creativity is what I’m proud of the most. I love to attend local festivals, craft shows and other vendor events around the Atlanta area on the weekends such as Smyrna Handmade Market because these events allow me to socialize with customers and I also get to meet other local small business owners versus an online order. I think one thing that sets me apart as a crafter and tumbler artist is the fact that I’m Haitian and I get a chance to represent my community.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
My husband always describes me as a calculated risk-taker because I tend to do things with a sense of urgency but with preparation in mind. As he likes to say from time to time, proper preparation prevents poor performance. When I decided to create Boss Mama Kreations, I was taking a risk because with everything I do, it takes time and a large amount of effort because I strive to create amazing products. After two years, I can say that I’m glad I took the risk and cannot wait to see what the future holds for BMK.
