Life & Work with Nathan Owens of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Owens.

Hi Nathan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Bluefield, West Virginia and moved to Flowery Branch when I was 4. After realizing my dream of being a professional athlete wouldn’t be realized based on simply not being very good at sports I needed to find something else. I wasn’t a good student but always liked to make people laugh and it was the way I could easily connect with people. Stand up comedy was always a big part of my life but never something I imagined I could do, but during my only semester at community college I was so miserable as an aimless student I had to find something. Stand up came back into my life in a big way and after googling how to become a comedian I was amazed to learn you could just do it. So I signed up for the open mic at Relapse Theater and was basically hooked from the start. After an unknowable amount of bombs later I’m still getting on stage and loving every second.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If comedy is smooth something is wrong. It requires failure for growth. Many of the struggles is learning to write and learning how you write. I’m 12 years in and still trying to find my voice. My favorite comedians have always been the most authentic and that’s what I want to bring to the stage.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a stand up comedian. I’m most proud of my 2 independent specials on YouTube. Every comedian tries to set themselves apart and from what I’ve seen the easiest way to separate from the pack is hard work and authentic jokes that can be relatable to audiences. Hopefully a story I tell, an observation I bring to the stage, a reaction I have makes someone in the audience nudge the person next to them as they both laugh.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Find friends who will push you as hard as they’re pushing themselves. Comedians David Perdue and Damon Sumner have become two of my closest friends and I wouldn’t be where I am without being able to watch them apply their advice to me to their own careers and watch them grown on stage. They demand the best from themselves and that’s who you want also demanding that you keep pace.
