Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Elliott.
Hi Nick, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started producing when I was 13, making EDM and dance remixes of pop songs, and at the end of high school, I got more into making hip hop beats. It wasn’t until I moved into a house with the rock band that I was playing with that I started to produce for people. My roommate and I would take beats and remake them or work with beats I had made and record songs, with the mic in the closet and everything. Once I was 21, I started to take it seriously and started an internship through a program called Recording Connection, focused on recording and audio engineering. Since I completed the program, I started my own basement studio in Southeast Portland and began to work with hop hop artists throughout the community. Six years later, I work with a local record label in Kelso, WA, and continue to do my own freelance recording and producing work, recording and producing everything from R&B to trap to old-school hip hop and pop.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has always been an uphill struggle making a name for myself without a parent organization or studio to push my name. Everything I’ve done has been through my own work, and the work of the team that I’ve assembled over the years. Especially in a town like Portland, where there are lots of pockets of people but the community can be very disconnected and people are loyal just to the people they know, all you have is your work to get your name out there. It’s always been worth the work, but it has been a slow process getting to where I’m at as a full-time producer and engineer.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full-time producer, engineer and instrumentalist. I specialize in hip hop production and engineering but have also made rock albums, pop albums and R&B projects. I am most proud, so far, of working with Afroman to record features in January and quitting my job in May to pursue my career full-time.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
People might be surprised to learn that I’m a fan of hip hop, but I’m just as big of a fan of metal. I grew up listening to metal bands and I listen to just as much metal and post-hardcore as I do hip hop.
