Today we’d like to introduce you to Qinye Xiang.
Hi Qinye, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a post-graduate student specializing in visual effects at SCAD, and my passion for painting began at the age of six during an extracurricular interest class. This creative outlet captivated me, and both my parents and teacher recognized the stark difference between me and my peers. While most children were active and energetic, I found solace in quietly and patiently creating artwork, infusing each piece with my own unique touch. I have nurtured this hobby ever since. During my primary school years, I discovered a video game called League of Legends, renowned for its breathtaking artistic design. This sparked my fascination with digital media, ultimately leading me to pursue a degree in film visual effects at an art university. Upon completing my undergraduate studies, I realized there was still a wealth of knowledge to acquire in the field of visual effects. Driven by the robust film visual effects industry in the United States, I made the decision to continue my education at SCAD. Now in my second year, I have had the privilege of working on projects such as NASA’s SCADpro class and creating a commercial film under the guidance of mentors from Harbor Picture. Additionally, I am currently interning as a digital compositor at MAKE studio this summer, where I am able to contribute to the visual effects industry by leveraging my aesthetic sensibilities and technical skills.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The realm of art is vast and encompasses numerous disciplines. As I honed my artistic sensibilities, I realized the multitude of categories within this expansive field. It was during my junior year that I made a deliberate choice to specialize in film visual effects. However, even within the realm of visual effects, I discovered a plethora of subcategories within the pipeline. Eager to gain comprehensive knowledge, I delved into each facet, from VFX supervising and producing to modeling, texturing, lighting, and more. Ultimately, I arrived at the decision to pursue a career as a compositor, drawing upon my solid artistic background. This role allows me to seamlessly blend elements and create visually stunning shots, combining my technical expertise with my artistic flair.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialized in compositing. I really like to make some realistic shots that you cannot see in real life. I finished a matte painting work last month.
I was inspired by the artist Leonid Tishkov. He created a series of photographs named Private Moon, a visual poem telling the story of a man who met the Moon and stayed with her for the rest of his life. Therefore, I created a matte painting with a moon, giving it dynamic effects in Nuke.
With a background in both art and film shooting, I possess a unique advantage in the field of visual effects. This diverse skill set allows me to approach my work with a broad vision, even when focusing on a specific aspect of the visual effects process. As a result, I am able to enhance the efficiency of collaborating with fellow artists, bringing a comprehensive perspective to the table. By leveraging my combined expertise, I am able to contribute to the seamless integration of visual effects within a project, ensuring a cohesive and visually compelling end result.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Since receiving the vaccination, I have realized that Covid-19 is less formidable for individuals. However, I have come to understand the vital importance of maintaining a strong and healthy body to prevent and endure the virus. Consequently, following my initial encounter with the virus, I embarked on a fitness journey. Presently, I not only relish in physical exercise but also explore diverse sporting activities such as dancing and hiking. Engaging in these pursuits has not only bolstered my physical well-being but also provided me with immense enjoyment and a sense of fulfillment.
