Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Isaza.
Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been making art for eight years, and it is truly my passion. I started drawing in high school and fell in love with visual art. While I went to college for Psychology with the long-term goal of becoming an Art Therapist, I have simultaneously been navigating the Atlanta art scene to find community and share my vision. I started posting online to keep an archive and build a portfolio, and over a few years, I have made about 100 pieces. While I have shown my work at many DIY venues and pop-ups, my dreams expand further; I want to create a mural in Atlanta one day, get certified as a tattoo artist, have an epic solo show, and of course, like many artists, I dream of living off my art. Those are my dreams, and I hope that passion is translated through my work.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
A shorter list would be the successes and the easy roads, but jokes aside, being an artist and a first-generation Latinx American, throwing caution to the wind to chase my dreams is not exactly practical. It’s tough to navigate the art world; rejection, having others question you, and even questioning yourself. It is a lifelong process of finding your artistic footing. You would be surprised at how many amazing artists considered quitting at one point or another. Imposter syndrome is real, and I always experience it with my identity as an artist. Still, I know the issues are deeper than my doubts, and as an artist, it is my duty to face myself and all my societal conditioning of success and still give myself grace and love. I don’t expect to become some overnight success, and I am willing to put in the work, so all the obstacles and challenges are a part of my journey that will lead me to become the successful artist I always have been.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My inspiration is heavily influenced by surrealist concepts of dreams and blurred lines between reality and fantasy. I am a multidisciplinary artist who works with acrylic, watercolor, ink pens, stamp carving, and charcoal. My art expresses a communication of the mind and imagination escaping the bounds of time by tapping into inner childlike whimsy and wonder. I am known for my bold contrasting colors and excessive layering. I am most proud of my painting ‘City of Dreams’, which was an experimental concept gone right; I think what makes me stand out is that I am uniquely myself, and my warm, inviting energy is in all my pieces.
