Life & Work with Razi D.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Razi D.

Hi Razi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story starts with my father, Wil Brooks, who is a bass player out of Detroit, MI. I’ve been around him and his live band since I was a baby. We’ve always had a recording studio in our basement and I’ve been able to practice with all of his instruments until he began buying my own personal bass, drums, piano, and guitars. Because I was raised in Motown with these circumstances, it gave me a pretty clear route as to what I feel my destiny is.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Yes, I LOVE what I do, but because there are so many artists/musicians in the world, I feel as if we have a bad rep. If you have yet to become a commercial artist/brand people, tend to look at rappers as if we will all sound the same. It’s so easy to get looked over, but once I get a new stranger to listen to my art they instantly feel refreshed and become supporters. It’s has also been interesting dealing with male egos. I’ve dealt with industry execs and managers who have the power and resources to take me to the next level, but they became envious and tried to block my blessings. God, my hustle, true supporters and determination are the only reasons that I’ve made it this far.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a recording artist/entertainer. I rap, sing, produce, write, and act from time to time. After ten years, I just reached the radio with my hit single “Caddy Feet”. I’m proud of my will and determination. Most of my peers who may be seen as failures only failed because they failed to stay consistent. I love and believe in my art so much that it outweighs any negative downfall or setback I have been or may go through. My musicianship sets me apart from most rappers of this time. I didn’t grow up on rap. I grew up listening to Motown classics, Anita Baker, the Isley Brothers, Gap Band, and Tony! Toni! Toné! I bring a positive, soulful storytelling approach to today’s rap music.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I watch youtube every single day. I study interviews from artists and producers who have been successful before me. YouTube is the main app I consume and produce content for.
