Today we’d like to introduce you to Renae Wilson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to Atlanta about 4 years ago to open myself up to more opportunities. I am originally from Houston, Texas and I graduated college with a bachelor’s in Human Resources. I have been dancing and performing ever since I could walk so it has always been my first love. I was blessed to truly dive deeper into my passion of dance and performing while living in Houston. I joined a competition team, i started performing with local artists, I really thought about how far I could take this. I would also travel to different states to dance and I truly felt moved when I visited Atlanta. I knew it was the next place to be! I’ve been honored to work with different artists and choreographers that I grew up dreaming of working with! The talent in Atlanta is amazing and I love that I get to be a part of it all.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think the road is smooth for anyone pursuing a career in the arts. When I first moved to Atlanta, I really had to get serious. I had to make enough money to pay my bills but to also train which means taking dance classes almost every night. I ended up picking up about 2 jobs which took me away from dance! And let’s not even start on the impact that covid had. Covid changed so much, especially mentally. In a way, you feel like you have ran out of time. But I think that moment in life really intensified my ambition. We no longer have time to waste, it’s now or never.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional dancer in Atlanta, GA. I specialize in commercial dance, but I have trained in all styles. I am most proud of dancing in a movie musical that will be coming out in December this year, that I cannot speak too much on YET. I have also found a new love in working behind the scenes in film. I have been casted as an extra in some film work, worked as production assistant and set decorator on a few short films. I plan on continuing to pursue entertainment and all that it has to offer!
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Wow! There are so many people, places and opportunities that have played a role in my success. When I lived in Houston I decided to start dancing at studios and I danced at a studio called Soundbox Studios and that completely changed my view on dance and training. I really want to pay homage to that studio! I would dance there almost every night, I joined their adult dance team called Wyldstyl and we won WOD Houston in 2014. That experience was amazing! All of the choreographers in ATL, wow I can’t even list them all. Every class I have trained at is equipped with great choreographers who try and pour their knowledge into their students. I have also attended tons of dance intensives with choreographers like Luam, Tia Rivera, Michele Soulchild, Jaquel Knight – they have all given so much knowledge in how to show up for myself and be great.
