Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Bell.
Hi Richard, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am the conductor and founder of the Southern Crescent Symphony. The orchestra is in its 36th year providing concerts for the residents of Clayton and surrounding counties. Members of the orchestra include music teachers, avocational musicians, retired musicians and music students all working together to bring quality music to our area.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The orchestra began as a small string ensemble and has grown to a full symphony of 65 members. For our first twenty years we performed in various area venues but for past 15 we’ve had the privilege of performing in Spivey Hall. As with many musical organizations the pandemic was challenging. During that time we were still able to record 2 concerts in a very unique widely spaced setting and share those concerts on line
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I began my career as a string orchestra director in the Clayton County schools. After 23 years there I taught for 7 years in Henry County where I began the string orchestra program for the school system. After retirement from the public schools I joined the faculty of Clayton State university where I am in my 13th year. I am most proud of two things in my career. First, the large number of my former students who are now music educators and colleagues. Second is the Southern Crescent Symphony and the positive impact it continues to have on the cultural life of Clayton County and surrounding areas.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have been involved with the Georgia Music Educators Association for my entire career. It has been a place for me to find mentors, encouragement, support and resources to be successful. Every Tuesday evening I get the chance to stand in front of a room full of Southern Cresent Symphony musicians who are all there simply for their love of music making. I am inspired by them every week. Finally, my students at Clayton State. Through all of the challenges of life and college they continue to succeed in their studies, support each other and set themselves up to be the type of professionals the world needs. I am so glad to be able to work with them.
