Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Brodowski.
Richard, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Like many, during the COVID years I searched out a new hobby. I enjoy barbequing, with my friends and family saying they thought I should start a YouTube channel about it. In 2021, I decided to purchase a camera and started taking photos at my daughter’s horseback riding lessons. This turned into taking photos at her horseshows, which turned into being asked to take the fall portraits at her barn. From there, I fell in love with photography and I never did start the YouTube channel.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
With photography being a part time job for me, there haven’t been too many struggles. I think the biggest struggle would have to be not being able to shoot as much as I would like. Trying to balance family, a full time job, and a part time photography job, the photography is easily 3rd. I also heavily research something before I do it, so I was pretty prepared when I started the business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I earn my photography income from equine portraits and barrel races, though I enjoy the portraits the most. I’m most proud of the fact that when I look at social media, I see photos that I’ve taken as their profile photos. As for what sets me apart from others, I tend to use lights in every shoot and I will experiment with light when I have the ability.
How do you think about luck?
I’ve been pretty fortunate, both by making good decisions and by being in the right place at the right time. I switched careers several years ago to one with a higher earning potential, which enabled me the freedom to be able to save more quickly to buy a new lens when I needed one, or upgrade a camera body. I lucked into that first job after a career switch, but my hard work kept me there and helped me progress.
