Life & Work with Richard Seymour IV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Seymour IV.

Richard, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I was in high school, at the age of 17, me and my friend got together and started a small brand throughout my Junior and Senior years. When I graduated and dedicated most of my time to college and working a job I realized I wanted to better myself on becoming an entrepreneur. In 2019 I wanted to do something different. A new look and a new name for myself so I committed myself to my business and put in extra hours working a job for about a year straight. Once 2020 came I went and started my brand Richesses Cloth. With the help of my brother, Malik Seymour, on graphics and designs for my very first collection for Fall 2020, I realized this is what I really love to do. Make masterpieces.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, in my opinion, there is no smooth road when it comes to running a business. With me running a fashion brand and creating custom rugs there is a lot of struggles on the way. Starting out with my clothing brand a year ago I decided to get all my merchandise manufactured in China. Dealing with manufacturers comes with plenty of cons such as the wait time for your inventory and small mistakes that can be made to your order. I’m a very detailed person when it comes to my work, so if errors are made to something I will either have to postpone a release or simply just put out alternate designs I came up with in the past.

Creating rugs for the most part has smooth roads. Although, it is very time-consuming and takes a lot of patience. Making one bad mistake can cause you to have to do the rug all over again from the beginning. For example, I decided to make my company’s logo for my first rug and ended up ripping the rug and not realizing so the tufting needle caused the rip to spread out through the rug. After doing more research and practicing more I started to master it better and better along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my community, I’m known for being an entrepreneur. Designing clothes and creating and customizing rugs on the Southside of Atlanta. I am most proud of me for keeping everything going and going full throttle after losing my brother Malik Seymour. Also, in the past year, I have been very dedicated to my businesses and put my job to the side to pursue my true Designer dreams.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Due to the fact that I started my business during the pandemic, realizing that I wasn’t able to work my job due to covid. I learned that nobody can stop you from making money off your own creations.
