Life & Work with Ronald Sullivan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronald Sullivan.

Ronald Sullivan

Hi Ronald, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am an artist creating sculptures using primarily wood and stone. I was born in Guyana and lived in England before migrating to the United States in my teens. I currently reside in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Starting in 2007, I took up sculpting as a hobby, working initially with stone. My initial interest in stone sculpture art was triggered by viewing the stone art of the Shona people in Zimbabwe.

The great and seemingly unlimited variety of woods and stones from around the world is something that really intrigues me; and I am fascinated by the almost unlimited creative possibilities afforded by these materials. I’ve used more than 40 different kinds of wood and 12 different kinds on stone from all over the world. Themes such as spirituality, family, nurture, completeness, and balance are often incorporated in my pieces. I believe art plays a vital role in providing joy, meaning and fulfillment to our lives.

I’ve participated in a variety of shows and exhibitions both in the USA and in Jamaica and I hold degrees in Electrical Engineering and Telecommunication Management.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a great experience along the way! I can’t say that there have been any significant struggles or obstacles. Any challenge in terms of the mechanics of sculpting or the handling or assembling of material has forced me to stretch my imagination and creativity and learn new techniques!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Prior to my official retirement, I worked for many decades in the Telecommunications industry in a variety of roles and disciplines. I liked the challenge of crafting solutions to technical problems and work tasks; both as an individual and as part of a team. My various roles included telecom facilities management, project management, systems engineering, and customer technical support. I’m particularly proud of the fact that in any specific assignment, I could bring to bear my broad experience and skills to efficiently complete tasks,

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The telecommunications industry is constantly evolving! Since I have retired, I’m not close enough to it to really get a sense of where it might be heading; but we can be sure that some amazing technologies will be made available to the public as time progresses.
