Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Newson.
Hi Ruby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story is created about God’s faith and purpose. I always knew I was creative but could never find my niche until now.
As a young military wife and mother, life seemed planned for me. It was assumed it was perfect and we had it all together. It was a huge adjustment from a very close-knit and big family to being 1,100 miles away with just my husband and son. Graduating from college was always a goal, however, I knew there was always more. It had to be. My first instinct was surprising my parents with a vow renewal after being married for 31 years with no formal wedding in 2016. Just two days before the big event, they were told everything was taken care of and all they had to do was show up in dressed. My mother’s dress was customed by a friend using measurements from a wedding dress we had made a few years prior and Daddy already had a suit, only worn once. Down the aisle, my mom walked as my dad cried seeing his bride officially in a wedding dress. It was all he ever talked about and two months later, he passed.
In his passing and even now, it is heard how much he impacted people. Over 300 people filled the church and his quote “live life to the fullest” still has value. That meant something to me. I wrote his obituary while assisting with final arrangements. The following year, I was set to graduate with an associate’s degree. Suddenly, I was hit with some life events that ultimately put me in a depression due to not finishing school along with other downfalls. I knew I was more than a veteran’s spouse, at this time, just a mother of two. I had a purpose but just had to find it, I had to pray and be patient!
Candles seemed simple enough but it became rather tedious real quick. And after purchasing custom shirts and not being satisfied with the quality or price, I figured I would give it a shot. Research became my best friend as I stumbled across a silhouette cameo machine similar to a Cricut. It seemed easy enough, but who had the money for that machine? Not me! Not that it was expensive but priorities came first. In 2019, casually talking to my sister, Jozette Brown about it, she asked for my address and hung up. A few days later, my cameo was at my doorstep. God had officially given me my gift!
Of course, I made mistakes in the beginning, and honestly, they still happen. But my love for crafting has grown daily. I feel purposeful to leave a positive impact on my customers rather it’s through my customer service or with that forever item they have purchased. Not only do I “create custom gifts to the fullest”, services include a preview of what the customer asked for, transparency throughout the process, and a smile every time.
Today I have serviced many individuals with personal and business items. Some of my highlights include prek shirts for Feldwood Elementary School, campaign buttons for a runner-up of Coweta County Superior Court, multiple branding shirts for NOD Percussion, flyers and obituaries with many items that honor loved ones, celebrate birthdays, family reunions, weddings, and new bundles of joy (babies).
With my husband, Ja’Min, supporting me, I have been able to not only graduate with one degree but two this past year. We are parents of three children, Ja’Mari, Jalia, and Ja’Vonna which I’ve homeschooled until this year. I am humbled and blessed to make a difference in someone’s life with every order!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road the entire time but overall, I am thankful for the journey and where I am. Most customers respect that I am human and have a family or other goals occurring. Communication is a huge factor in that. However, there are a few that expect an unrealistic turnaround or response time. I ask for notice because I prefer to not throw something together. If you’re going to order from me, I want to give you something you can’t purchase in-store or anywhere else. It’s going to be something that fulfills the cost and longevity of time. Other bumps that occur are unexpected shipping delays, machine technical difficulties, or lack of items desired. With every bump that has and will happen, I have learned to count it as a lesson and learn from it. Hitting bumps are expected so I roll over them as they come and keep going.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create various custom items including shirts and jerseys, drinkware, home products, pillows, charms, etched glass items, and so much more. I specialize in vinyl and sublimation. I love to create my own designs if possible. I am known for my creativity, such as freestyling designs and giving the customers the opportunity to preview and edit the design before completion. I believe this also sets me aside from other crafters. I think my vision is only as good as a customer’s. Therefore, satisfaction is expected when the item is completed. I am most proud of having a gift that not only brings me purpose but also has a purpose for others regardless of the item!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned is that what is for me is for me. There are many individuals who create just as much as me. I do not compare nor compete because everyone’s walk in life is different. When I am not crafting, I am assisting my mother with her cake business, Sweet Things from the Bee, building myself more professionally in my craft, or spending time with my husband and family. Time and family wait for no one and having a custom item doesn’t either!
