Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Anthony.
Hi Sabrina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
So, I am a first-generation daughter of Guyanese parents. My childhood was really intense. I was in and out of detention centers. Looking to find solace in whatever was going on in my household. I started writing and journaling in middle and high school. I always enjoyed reflecting on what was happening and how I felt. Sometimes, I didn’t know what I was feeling so I would just write down ONE word and build on it as the days went on. Writing became my escape.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey and road haven’t been smooth at all. Some of the struggles along the way for me have been imposter syndrome, timing not being right, simultaneously building a foundation while trying to build a legacy, being ruled by fear, trying to figure out who I was and who I wanted to be. These are just a few of the struggles I’ve personally encountered along the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a writer. I write about mental health, life, and anything that I can relate to that day.
I published my first book Sept of last year, titled Manipulated Memories. My inspiration for this book was my younger self. I never expected that I would be here long enough to tell my story. I knew I wanted and needed to document my survival.
My ending quote of the book is: “Not everyone survives, thank you for surviving.” I hope this book speaks to anyone who is now showing up as someone their younger self would be proud of.
I also released a spoken word EP titled spoken memories. Some of my poems from the book tied together through a soundtrack.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by what I commit to. Success to me is accomplishing things I said I was going to do. No matter how long it takes.
