Life & Work with Sara Bartley of Cumming

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Bartley.

Hi Sara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?

Growing up, I always had a disposable camera in hand. As I got older, I would photograph my travels never imagining that photography could actually become a career.

In 2019, while working at Van Michael Salon, a coworker began photographing weddings. I was so intrigued that I asked if I could tag along just to experience it, even telling her she didn’t have to pay me. I immediately fell in love.

I began second shooting weddings for her whenever I could, soaking in everything I was learning, until my husband and I moved to Tampa in 2021. We were only there for a few years, but during that time I attended a photography meetup where I met a friend who later encouraged me to start my own when we moved back to Georgia in 2024.

I was so nervous to put myself out there in that way, but I’m incredibly grateful I did. Starting a monthly photography meetup has connected me with so many talented, creative, and encouraging women. It has helped me grow tremendously in my business and one of the most rewarding parts is hearing that it has helped others grow in theirs, too.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest struggles has honestly been confidence. As much as I love the creative side of photography, building a business was more challenging than I expected. I’ve definitely experienced imposter syndrome, wondering if I was ready or good enough.

Over time, I’ve learned that those feelings are incredibly common and often a sign that you’re stretching and growing. Thankfully I have such a supportive husband who really helps with the business side when I need it, as well as my community who is always cheering me on.

Starting the photography meetups was also a huge step out of my comfort zone. I was so nervous to put myself out there in that way. But it’s been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. It’s taught me that leadership doesn’t mean having it all figured out, it just means showing up anyway.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Georgia based wedding and portrait photographer specializing in timeless, true to life imagery. I blend gentle direction with candid storytelling to capture the authentic, in between moments that make their day uniquely theirs. I’m known for having a calm presence which makes clients feel at ease in front of the camera. I’m most proud of the experience I create for my clients and the community I’ve built alongside my work, where I can help people feel comfortable, supported, and genuinely seen.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think the future of wedding photography will continue to focus on authenticity, storytelling, and meaningful experiences.
