Life & Work with Scarves and Spikes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scarves and Spikes. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Scarves and Spikes

Scarves and Spikes began as a post-match Twitter Spaces show on Dirty South Soccer back in 2022; Tyler Pilgrim, Tommy Moos, and Sydney Hunte would host the show and invite fans to hop on the microphone and give their thoughts about the most recent Atlanta United match that had just finished. The response was phenomenal, as people truly enjoyed ranting, raving, and giving their two cents to the team they loved. At the end of 2022 was the FIFA World Cup, and we had the idea to try and evolve the Spaces into a full-fledged podcast.

We launched the podcast at the beginning of the 2023 MLS season, covering every aspect of Atlanta United’s season and having a variety of Atlanta and MLS/Apple TV guests, players, and influencers on the show. We then had a soft launch of our website, ScarvesAndSpikes.com, in midsummer as the show and content rapidly grew. Tyler and Sydney both have covered the team and league at length for years, and this was the next evolution of the show into the main source for all Atlanta United and MLS coverage.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The growth has been both brilliant and humbling, and sometimes it can get overwhelming trying to make sure content is going up on social media platforms, articles are being written, guests are being lined up, and so much more. We love it, though, and despite it being a labor of love with minimal monetary return at this point, we just enjoy it.

The challenges of growing so quickly are truly a blessing; the whole experience has taught us a ton. We’ve certainly all learned to balance our time much more efficiently! Thanks to that growth, we’ll be doing some live shows at various venues in the city, including the brand new Signia by Hilton hotel next to Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with your work?
We wanted our podcast to continue the fan engagement we enjoy on the Twitter/X Spaces show (which we still do after every Atlanta United match). Folks can watch the live show and comment, and we try and hit on various comments throughout the show.

We also wanted it to be entertaining and not simply us rattling off the latest news, so we began bringing on a variety of guests who also cover either Atlanta or MLS as a whole. We’ve had Atlanta players like Tyler Wolff, Noah Cobb, Nick Firmino, Aidan McFadden, and Andrew Gutman, radio broadcasters Mike Conti and Jason Longshore, Atlanta United’s own DJ EU, Flag’s Out host Tony Leon, and many Apple TV/MLS guests like Taylor Twellman, Steve Cangialosi, Kevin Egan, Marcelo Balboa, Keith Costigan, Lori Lindsey, and plenty of others.

And then our website, which is new and improved, brings all the latest Atlanta United news and info from around the league. We cover the club from top to bottom, from the first team to the Academy. We have a great group of writers alongside us who traveled with us from the old Dirty South Soccer site, and we’ve tried to carry on the coverage that everyone loved from there.

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
In many ways, this entire venture has been a risk. Putting oneself out into the public isn’t typically very comfortable, but we’ve found a place and enjoy the content we bring to Atlanta United fans.

We’ve been told “no” more times than “yes,” especially regarding inquiries about partnerships and sponsorships. We also had no idea how well we’d work together or how people would react to us. Regardless, it’s all been worth it; every risk has been worth the reward.
