Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Schur.
Scott, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started producing through an ‘Electronic Music’ class at my high school when I was 15. Initially, I did not have a good understanding on most of it. Mixing, rhythm, making melodies. I knew what I wanted to hear, but I did not have the means to make it sound like that. I used to try to recreate popular melodies to practice, and that has kind of come full circle now as a lot of my work involves sampling or remixing popular songs and melodies. During my college years, I completely stopped producing. After graduating, with the extra time on my hands I decided to give it a second shot, and now I’m at a point where I’ve gotten some big placements. It took about 8 months straight of producing drill/trap beats before I even got an artist to respond to my emails or dms. That’s where I’m at today, trying to progress and network every day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been relatively smooth. This was always a hobby first and a job second. I’ve realized that if I try to force the creative aspect of producing it never comes out sounding good. So, I treat producing like that and only work on music if I’m really feeling what I’m making.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in producing drill beats. That has been my main focus, and I think what differentiates my work from the crowd is the samples I select. Although I’ll occasionally choose very popular songs, I normally take an alternative route from most when it comes to sampling. I tend to look for alternative songs and rock/metal music for most of my melodies. I also think that when it comes to creating melodies in drill music I’ve taken a different style on as well. Normally, drill melodies are dark sounding, occasionally detuned, and with my sound and chord selection, I try to take on a very different sound.
