Life & Work with Shanika Thomas of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanika Thomas

Hi Shanika, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From a young age, I’ve always felt a calling to help others. While I wasn’t exactly sure what form that help would take, I knew that serving others was my purpose. Interestingly enough, I initially thought I wanted to become a plastic surgeon. I imagined transforming lives by helping people feel better about themselves and boosting their confidence. But as I grew and matured, my path took a different direction.

At Clark Atlanta University, my passion for helping others evolved as I explored the human mind and behavior. I majored in psychology because I wanted to understand why people do the things they do, and this fascination led me to pursue a deeper path in social work. The vibrant community and the values instilled at my alma mater inspired me to stay and earn a Master’s in Social Work. My commitment to social justice and advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves led me down this fulfilling road.

During my journey, I developed a strong passion for working with children and families facing mental health struggles. This love for the profession fueled my decision to continue my education and pursue a Doctoral Degree in Social Work from Capella University. My career path has taken me from being a therapist and diagnostic assessor to a clinical supervisor, all while I worked toward becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Currently, I am a school social work in Atlanta, GA.

Through these experiences, I’ve found immense joy in helping individuals navigate their mental, emotional, and behavioral challenges. My work is focused on alleviating distress and improving overall well-being, but I also recognized that I still had more to offer. A desire to reach an even broader audience led me to content creation.

By sharing my experiences, insights, and tips on personal development, I hope to encourage people around the world to live their best lives. I believe deeply in the power of confidence and self-esteem. As I always say, “When you look good, you feel good,” and I want to inspire others to embrace their best selves, inside and out.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many, I’ve faced my share of setbacks and challenges along the way. The first major hurdle came when I was a senior in my undergraduate program. I found out I was pregnant with my sweet baby boy, and the stereotype of being a single mother felt overwhelming. Many people doubted my ability to graduate, let alone care for a newborn on my own. But not only did I defy their expectations, I graduated with honors.

I had my son in July, and by August, I was already enrolled in my Master’s program. Once again, I was navigating this journey alone, but my determination to succeed pushed me forward. My son became my motivation, a constant reminder of why I had to keep going. I am forever grateful for the support of my family, who helped care for my son and never let me give up on my dreams.

However, life threw another curveball my way. Shortly after completing my doctoral program, I was laid off during the pandemic. In that moment, all my hard work felt like it was unraveling. With limited finances, a mortgage, and a child to support, I wasn’t sure how I would manage. But in those uncertain times, I returned to what I know best: serving others. I became more involved in my church, and just weeks later, an opportunity for new employment came my way. A few months later, I was promoted.

Looking back, every challenge I faced led me to where I am today. My journey isn’t just about overcoming obstacles; it’s about showing others that perseverance is key. I want the world to know that there’s someone out there who understands the struggle of being a single parent and facing hardship, yet never gave up. Being a content creator allows me to share my story, offer advice, and encourage others who may be walking the same path.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed, doctoral-level clinical social worker with over 10 years of experience helping individuals navigate their mental, emotional, and behavioral challenges. My work is focused on alleviating distress and improving overall well-being, allowing people to lead healthier, more balanced lives. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working as a school social worker and a content creator.

As a content creator, I aim to inspire my community to live their best lives, have fun with fashion and makeup, and embrace the idea of not looking like what they’ve been through. I encourage others to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle while embracing their unique qualities and building their confidence along the way.

What I’m most proud of is my resilience. Despite the odds stacked against me, I’ve persevered through negativity, challenges, and lonely days. I can truly say that I never gave up, no matter the cards I was dealt. What sets me apart from others? I believe it’s my unique approach—encouraging others to live their best lives by showing them that anything is possible. I’ve walked this path, and I know others can do the same. If I can do it, so can you, and when you do it be the BEST at what you do.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I didn’t do this alone. My son has been my daily motivation, driving me to never give up. My ultimate goal is to ensure that when I leave this earth, he’s set up for success and has the foundation for generational wealth. I owe so much to my parents, who have been my biggest cheerleaders from the very beginning. They’ve invested their time, energy, and encouragement into my journey, and I’m forever grateful.

I also want to thank my aunt, who has supported my educational growth, particularly throughout my Master’s and Doctoral programs. My siblings have been a huge source of motivation as well, showing me how to be the best entrepreneur I can be. Finally, I’m deeply grateful for my previous internship supervisors, colleagues, close friends, and advisors, all of whom have been a constant source of support and encouragement throughout my journey.
