Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanique Lovelace.
Hi Shanique, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Sundays were baking days with my mom, throughout my childhood. This continued throughout my life, into adulthood where I took over & began baking for family and friends, sending treats to their workplace, as a surprise. After years of causally baking, I chose to make it a business, as I was often asked to bake. I customized my own baking cart to do PopUp markets so anyone can “always have a lil treat”. Loveys is more than just baking is a way of connection, through sweets, kindness and love. As the name stems from my last name. There is much more to come.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but every barrier teaches me something valuable. Starting Lovey’s as a pop-up meant learning how to do a little bit of everything myself: baking through the night, setting up, managing supplies, and still showing up with a smile to greet customers.
There were challenges figuring out the best locations, dealing with unpredictable weather, and balancing the creative side of baking with the business side; which has been new to me.
There were days when I wasn’t sure if people would show up, or if all the hard work would pay off. Still, each time someone tastes our treats and enjoys or a returning customer, it reminds me of why I started Lovey’s: bringing comforting connection.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My professional career has been within humanitarian work, for the past 10+ years, centered on helping individuals and families through social services and immigrant affairs.
I specialize in connection, bridging the gap between resources and people, as well as within community partnerships.
As an immigrant myself, I empathize with the nuances of transition and life changes. I am most proud of my ability to incorporate diversity into Lovey’s, from the various treats I learned to bake, while living abroad in different countries to new techniques that compliments traditional recipes.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along the journey is one must show up and be disciplined. Life will always throw curve balls but you must be adaptable and steadfast.
Additionally, cakes are precarious, temperamental & moody. One mistake will change the taste/structure/look. Patience and intent is important.
