Today we’d like to introduce you to Shara Jackson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Born and raised in Wayzata, Minnesota I started dancing at the age of three. I was born a natural performer. From early on, I trained in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical and tap dance and began competing in dance at the age of 6. Performing was a part of my DNA. After dancing throughout high school, I earned a spot on the renowned national championship University of Minnesota dance team.
My love for entertainment took me to Los Angeles, CA after college graduation, where I spent seven years working as a creative director for Star Education non-profit organization – focusing on quality performing arts curriculum and enrichment. From there, my professional dance career took off. Some of my credits include Nickelodeon Day of Play, Girls Scouts Corporate and performing at the White House for 4 consecutive years, for Michelle Obamas “Let’s Move” initiative. I have made TV appearances for; Beyonce, Glee, Radio Disney, Pepsi, and the Superbowl pre-show. One day I decided to stop looking for that perfect entertainment job; instead, I decided to create it.
SDP Dance Studio began by taking a leap of faith. I wanted to build a community where I felt like I belonged and where other kids could feel the same. I started with 2 students, a supportive husband and family by my side and faith. So, I took the jump and SDP Dance Studio was born
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There should be big sign that reads “PROCEED WITH CAUTION” before you start driving down an entrepreneur road. My biggest challenge has been to practice patience. I have always had a strong work ethic. Working late and sacrificing time with friends and family has never been the hard part for me. Having the patience to give my business and brand time to grow and evolve has always been the hardest part.
When you begin a business, it is like having a baby for the first time. There is so much excitement involved but so much of a learning curve. My husband has always told me that “Great things take time” and yet when you are grinding you still ask yourself, “Why aren’t my goals being met?” There have been countless days when I felt like my business was not growing fast enough or creating the results that reflected my brand. I have learned that experience is the best teacher. Sometimes you must take a different turn then planned. Learn from your clients and staff – always pay attention to what is and isn’t working. Most importantly, give your business time to grow into its full potential before giving up.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My dance studio provides a wide range of dance styles including: ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, acrobatics and children’s theater classes for ages 3 to 18. We offer beginner to advanced level programs including a competition dance program for the passionate dancer who strives for greatness. My choreography works are a true reflection of my personality – high energy and fun.
My dance studio has a diverse clientele and staff. Our faculty includes a team of individuals with different training backgrounds, talents and ethnicities. This gives our students a broader range of training and encourages inclusivity. Most importantly, we stand on teaching our classes with high energy and joy. We believe that every child should leave class feeling inspired and confident on and off the stage. Our proudest moment was earning the title of Hip-Hop National Champion at the Showstoppers East Coast Finals in 2022.
