Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherri V.
Sherri, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Sherri V. I’m a Loctician. I’ve been in the hair industry for 22 years. I became a licensed hair braider at the age of 17 in 1996. Over the next five years, I perfected my skills in all braiding and designed braiding styles during that time. In 2002 my business and my skills evolved into doing locs. With the industry changing, I had to adapt to survive. In 2007 Purebelle Locs-n-Braids was born. I opened my first natural hair salon which later expanded to three locations in Jacksonville, Florida. Throughout that time, I participated in numerous hair shows, magazine features, taught and attended Loc styling classes, and built a large clientele including local and celebrity Loc stars in both Jacksonville Florida and Atlanta, GA. Expressing myself through hair art started as a struggle but continuing on that path saved my life and proved to be the right path. Currently, I’m focusing on educating and certificating as many Aspiring and professional locticians I can through my program called Loc Pro University (LPU). We want to provide a home for cosmetologists, barbers and locticians to sharpen their skills and create multiple streams of income from one skill. I will continue to serve others with and through my gift of creativity.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The challenges I faced along the way included raising a child, becoming a different version of myself over and over, and my biggest challenge was dealing with a chronic illness called Polycystic Kidney Disease. Through it all I knew I had to push through and show up for my business. Doing hair during those times saved me from staying severely depressed, they gave me something to fight for and kept me realizing I had more work to do. Giving up wasn’t an option
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m most proud of sustaining in the natural hair industry for over 20 years. I’m known for creating Loc styling. I have accomplished building a career, starting a Loc hair care line called Raining Aloe Hair and Skin Products, I published a book “100k loctician” and making countless people beautiful in the world. Being a loctician is a growing profession now. I’m happy to be able to help lead the next generation into having a successful career.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When looking for a mentor, find someone who has done what you want to accomplish. I’d suggest looking for a stylist mentor that’s still active today. I’m still an active stylist and my mentors are also. Terrance Davidson and Thando Kafele are my mentors. They both are amazing stylists and have been doing hair for over 30 years. Your mentor should provide insight for you to be successful
