Life & Work with Skai Hye of Oklahoma City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skai Hye

Hi Skai, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My musical journey began about 13 years ago! I always knew I was a star and I used to write a lot of poetry and songs growing up. In middle school I met friends who were also artists, so I started working with them and we created our group Nightmare Gang. We had a nearly 8 year run before choosing to part ways in pursuit of solo ventures. This is the time when I released my first solo EP “Skai Season”, where I held nothing back experimentally, diving into learning whom I wanted to be moving forward. Following this I took an almost 3 year hiatus where by studying music and recording frequently, I pushed myself harder than ever and gained so much growth. I made my official solo debut in 2021 and came back with a new mindset and new pinnacles to reach. I started working with my manager and videographer Taylormade Jay and things have been up ever since! Expect MANY more songs and videos to come sooner rather than later!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road lol but nothing worth having comes easy! I think some of the most challenging times for me were after my group broke up. I was so used to how I fit there that when I went solo it took me a while to figure out who I wanted to be. There’s so much pressure to look and sound a certain way as a female artist and if you’re not careful it’s easy to allow those things to change who you are. This is why I took a hiatus between my group ending and re-launching my career officially. Thinking back now that was one of the best decisions I could’ve made because I was able to go through artist development and know who I wanted to be. There’s also pressure to surround yourself with the right people because it truly does take a team. I’ve worked with so many people in my career and a decent amount of them betrayed me or had ulterior motives. Music is like my baby so when people join my team there’s a big amount of trust that goes into that and when it’s broken that makes it so much harder to trust others. Luckily I have a great team now and I’m able to use those lessons moving forward. There were other struggles as well but I think the best part about those struggles is that they made me stronger and I learned so much. It’s the struggles that make you appreciate when things get bigger and better!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Yessss!! I am known for being one of the bigger female artists in Oklahoma City and one thing about me is everything I do is FLY. From my energy, to my lyrics, to my fashion, it’s important for me to push the boundaries on what it means to be a female artist in the game right now. Beyond music I am an actress and a model! I started acting at the age of 14 in a haunted house and then did drama in high school which is how I fell in love with it. I had my first role in a film shortly after graduating and since then I’ve acted in multiple web series and movies, and have some other projects in the works but I can’t talk about them just yet! Modeling was something I started doing seriously in college. I watched America’s Next Top Model faithfully growing up, so once I was in position to start pursuing it I jumped right in. I guess you could say I’m really a performing artist! Dancing, painting, anything that allows me to express myself, I find enjoyment in. What I’m most proud of is that I’ve given myself the freedom to chase my dreams and be exactly who I want to be. Once I started walking in my purpose and released my fear, my career started taking off! When I say that I’m fly it means that I’m rising above any expectations, competition, fear, standards, or any other negative energy placed on me. The fly energy, care for what I do, versatility, and lyricism are what set me apart! My new music is so different from what you’ve heard from me before and I plan to keep pushing the limits on what I can do. The love for the craft and artistry of music is what gives me life!

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I can’t even imagine where the industry will be in the next 5-10 years lol! I’d like to think I’d be top of the charts with at least one grammy lol! I’ve been doing music for 13 years so when I think about where the industry was when I started to where we are now, there’s been so much growth! From cds to streaming, social media and popularity overpowering talent, it’s so crazy! The music game is so over-saturated right now so I’d like to see fans value quality artistry and artists to add more value to their craft. There’s no doubt in my mind we’ll have some big shifts that will probably come sooner rather than later! With new streaming services, AI, and everything else coming I’m interested to see how the industry will respond and what that’ll mean for us. Adaptation and versatility will be key!
