Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Combs.
Hi Stacey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Minneapolis-based illustrator & mainly use gouache/watercolor. My biggest interests are nature, video games, trying my best to be kind, and food! A lot of that comes right out in my artwork.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I don’t think that it is for many creatives, though. There’s a lot that goes into running your own business, and you have to wear a lot of different hats. You have to learn how to do everything. When the COVID pandemic began, I seized the crisitunity (opportunity stemming from crisis) to step away from my day job and focus on art full-time. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the hellish depths of social media and imposter syndrome, but at the end of the day I just have to remind myself that I absolutely love what I do. I work my butt off all the time, but the freedom that comes from being my own boss is totally worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make my own stickers, prints, stationery & more. I dabble in design and work on commissions for peoples’ homes, as well as everyone from bands & realtors! I also stream (mostly) art on Twitch & have really enjoyed building a community there.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just keep at it. Keep doing what you do and you’ll get better at it. Share it with your community and keep on learning every day.
