Life & Work with Stephen Mark of Sandy Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Mark.

Hi Stephen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off drawing my own comic book when I was a young teenager. That progressed into writing poetry and doing some songwriting, before breaking into short stories and eventually completing my first novel.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, not smooth at all. At every stage, there are obstacles trying to pull you down and make you second guess your decisions. The trick is to follow your dreams and goals, keeping your head up along the way. Trying to gain access to the rooms where you feel people can assist you in obtaining your goals is also a challenge. People will only pay attention to you once you’ve established yourself as a “name” but won’t help you get to that point. Finding your resources and breaking into the arenas where you have to make people see you is a constant uphill battle. One that I’m still fighting, to be honest.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m extremely proud of my writing. It’s my passion. Actually, being a creative all together is a passion of mine. To think up story lines and character personalities is exciting to me. Being able to create a person or persons out of thin air, give them their individual personalities, and allowing them to become three dimensional in your own mind is a gift. Eventually they tell you how their story is supposed to go…and end.
Aside from writing, I also create artisan jewelry designs. Also making pieces that fit each person’s personality that I create for, is an honor. Each piece is one of a kind, and I never duplicate a design. This allows me to step outside of myself and make something that is unique to each individual that wears my creations.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Writing is a media that is continuously changing. From physical books to audio and e-books, the industry has evolved towards more technological mediums. AI has introduced a new level of creativity that seems to be taking over individual thought, and I see that being where most industries are moving towards in the not-too-distant future. Hopefully there will still be a place for us creatives to fit into a world dictated by technology.
