Life & Work with Taegen (Fever Fawn) Dawkins of Atlanta, GA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taegen (Fever Fawn) Dawkins

Hi Taegen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started writing songs when I was beginning high school in 2012. Songwriters like Lana Del Rey and Marina Diamandis heavily inspired me at the time. I picked up guitar around the same time and began to compose. In my sophomore year of high school I started a music technology class and it spawned an interest in music production. Ever since then I’ve been working to further my craft. I’ve done an internship at a recording studio, got my degree in audio engineering, and formed a band to play my songs live. It’s been a long journey but I feel like I’ve got my process down to a science now. I don’t think there’s any substitute for patience and hard work.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road! I’ve faced a lot of opposition, especially in my genre of music. I feel like one of the most formative negative experiences I had was someone saying I “don’t need to be messing with a guitar.” Of course that just prompted me to make my debut album a love letter to my first instrument (the guitar)! I think it’s disappointing that my music has sometimes been dismissed on account of my gender, race, or at times, both. I’m so glad to see more and more women of color in the alternative and indie scenes, specifically Black women.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I think I’d best describe myself as a singer-songwriter-producer. I specialize in world building around my songs and concepts. I love a concept! I think that is something that I am known for and that sets me apart. There’s so much talent in Atlanta, in Georgia really, but I think that I consistently choose a theme and stick with it. Whether that means visually, lyrically, or sonically—I go all in. I think I am most proud of my ability to execute my visions. It’s rare for me to not be able to fully see something through and I think that’s one of my super powers.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think that social media has to stop playing such a big role in the entertainment industry if we want to see some change. I know that probably won’t happen but I do think some of the most interesting underground music isn’t blowing up because it isn’t being marketed correctly. At the same time, I see some content going viral for reasons I don’t think necessarily warrant that. So I hope that people start seeking out the under 10k monthly listeners artists, because there’s a lot of good ones.
