Life & Work with Dr. Taijah Davis, EdD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Taijah Davis, EdD.

Hi Dr. Davis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a student who always received a “talkative in class” comment on my report card, it makes sense that I would end up in a career as a psychotherapist. I have been in the mental health field as a school counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) for close to a decade. In 2019, I obtained my Doctoral degree (EdD) in Counseling Education and Supervision from the University of West Georgia and became certified as a licensed professional counselor.

Through my work in private practice, I recognized that there was a growing number of adults having trouble managing the everyday expectations of life. From experiencing depression and anxiety, childhood trauma to unhealthy romantic and platonic relationships, low job satisfaction and minimal financial literacy — so many are having extreme difficulty navigating these spaces. Seeing this and hearing my client’s personal trials and obstacles, I felt an obligation to provide individuals with the skills, techniques, coping mechanisms, and professional insights that I have acquired over the years in the mental health field to maneuver this arduous road called life.

As a result of my work, I decided to develop an organization called Unstuck Yourself. A lot of people feel reach certain points in their lives where they truly feel stuck — not making the progress, being stagnant, feeling emotionally, mentally, and perhaps financially drained. Unstuck yourself is pulling yourself out of a hole and moving forward to reach your full potential. Through life coaching services, an “Unstucking Yourself” Masterclass, as well as online resources, tips, and tools via the Instagram page @_Unstuckyoursellf, I hope to help individuals feel confident and comfortable obtaining happiness and developing into their authentic selves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Developing “Unstuck Yourself” has been a relatively smooth road; however getting to this point has undoubtedly had its challenges. In looking back, the biggest obstacle I had was being confident in myself as a professional. Early in my career, I naturally had some who would challenge me because of my age or even ethnicity. That being said, as time progressed, I realized that there would always be those who are cynical and dwell in negative spaces. If I let those individuals call me to question my abilities, my clients would be the ones who inevitability suffer. I refuse to let that happen. So, anytime I am in doubt, I remind myself I am a professional, great at what I do, and have the resources to support me if I need them. That is how I continue to thrive.

Also, I would be remiss if I did not mention the full support system I have in my family; who have always helped me on my journey to reach my goals and overcome my obstacles. I would be absolutely lost without them.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed professional counselor from Kennesaw, Georgia. I would consider my areas of expertise to include working with adolescents and young adults with issues concerning anxiety, depression, self-worth, ADHD, career counseling, relationships, and family therapy. When working with clients, I utilize a Cognitive Behavioral Therapeutic (CBT) approach in tandem with Eclectic therapeutic techniques to provide them with an approach which works best for them. In 2019, I obtained my EdD in Professional Counseling and Supervision from the University of West Georgia. I believe therapy needs to be a collaborative effort and I work jointly with my clients to get them in a place where they feel good about themselves and the future.

One of the things I am most proud of is obtaining my Doctoral degree in Counseling Education and Supervision and my Licensed Professional Counselor certification (LPC) by the age of 30. It was a goal I had set my sights on years ago, and walking across that stage to get hooded for my doctoral degree was truly one of the highlights of my life.

One thing that sets me apart from other therapists/life coaches is that I thrive to create an authentic relationship with my clients — and always promote a “judgement free” zone. I appreciate people’s stories and who they are as individuals; and all of my clients know that I am their biggest cheerleader…I want them to become the best version of themselves.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Through the Covid-19 Crisis, I’ve been reminded of how much connectedness is a key part of the human experience. Sometimes it is easy to forget, but people need to feel as though they belong and are loved. We are not meant to be in complete isolation — so we need to all, myself included, be more intentional about reaching out and connecting with those around us.

That flows directly into my next point: Life is short; so do not live in the past.

I know it has been said a million times before, but if the pandemic has taught me nothing else, it is that a loved one can be here one minute and taken away unexpectedly the next. Make it a point to enjoy the moments you have — you can do absolutely nothing about what has happened in the past; so do not dwell. Find your solution, ground yourself, and move forward with the wisdom gained from the experience.
