Life & Work with Tamara McRae of Buford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara McRae

Hi Tamara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story begins in Trenton, KY, a small town with a population of just 328 people. I spent eight years of my life in Kentucky, where my love for singing and dancing first took root. Church and family gatherings became my stage as I performed at every opportunity. In my free time, I would write songs and film myself performing them, dreaming of one day standing on a big stage.

In 2011, my mother moved my brother and I to Georgia, where my passion for music only grew stronger. I sang and danced whenever I could, and in 2018, I launched a YouTube channel to share covers of my favorite songs. During that time, I also posted about my journey learning Korean as my second language. By 2021, I joined an Atlanta-based girl group, connected by our love of K-pop. We performed in various competitions and events across the city including the 2022 Atlanta K-pop World Festival where we won 1st place.

In the spring of 2023, I moved to Korean alone at 20 years old for three months and made unforgettable memories that really shaped me both personally and artistically. I truly enjoyed my time in Korea and plan to visit again.

Today, I am pursuing my solo career and working hard to develop myself as an artist. I’ve been performing and sharing covers on my TikTok page to connect and build my following.

Music has always been the center of my life, and my passion for singing and dancing continues to drive me forward. This journey is only just beginning, and I’m so excited for what lies ahead.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle in my journey was losing my grandmother in December of 2019. She was one of my greatest supporters, always encouraging me and cheering me on. No matter the distance, she would travel from Kentucky to be there for my big moments. As a child, whenever I imagined my future, she was always a part of it—continuing to love and support me every step of the way.

Her absence is something I never could have prepared for, but I find strength in knowing how proud she would be of all that I’ve accomplished. Her unwavering belief in me keeps me moving forward. Even though she’s no longer here, I carry her love and support with me every day.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a singer, dancer, and content creator dedicated to sharing my passion for music. I specialize in vocal performance and have a love for both K-pop and R&B, which often influence my style. My journey began in small-town Kentucky, where I sang and danced at church and family events, and it has evolved into pursuing a solo career as an artist.

I’ve been part of an Atlanta-based girl group, performing in competitions and events, and I now focus on growing my audience through TikTok, where I post song covers and share my journey as an artist. I also speak Korean as a second language and have lived in Korea.

What I believe sets me apart is my determination. Although I’ve had plenty of challenging moments, I will always continue to push forward towards my goals no matter how long it takes. I strive to inspire and share the love of music that has carried me through life’s challenges. One of my proudest moments is a recent performance of mine where I received a standing ovation. It reminded me that my hard work and passion has not been in vain.

Ultimately, my journey is fueled by resilience and a deep connection to my music, which I bring into everything I create.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned during my journey is to stop comparing myself to others. It’s so easy to get caught up in watching the progress of those around you and start questioning your own path. But I’ve realized that dwelling on where I could or should be only keeps me stuck in the past.

The key is to live fully in the present moment and accept where I am right now. This mindset shift has helped me move forward with confidence and clarity. Everyone’s journey is unique, and there’s power in trusting that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be in this moment.
