Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiien .
Hi Tiien, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It’s actually pretty crazy that I make music, but not at the same time. I grew up playing instruments. Mainly piano and violin, but learned trumpet, clarinet, cello, and stopped once I got to high school, and it became homework. I was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana and pretty much in the community center so this made it easy for me to find hip-hop. I got obsessed with lyrics and would write down all my favorite songs by Eminem and Lil Wayne just to rap them back to myself. I didn’t want to make my own songs at that point. I do remember two friends and I started a rap group in 5th grade called Money-Team or something, but that was the first rap I guess I ever wrote. The next time I did it I was about 19 and just started writing my best freestyles down then writing whole songs. I got a snowball mic, went crazy in Audacity for a while and just slowly grew from that to now having my own equipment and all. So it had to kind of grow on me, but looking back at how it happened, it doesn’t seem too far away. At this point, I’ve learned what it takes to really make music a career and have started building everything in my life to get to where I want to be.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. I’ve been through phases as an artist. A whole phase of learning, then thinking I was taking it seriously but realizing I wasn’t doing anything right, then not sure if I still wanted to do it, and now I know what I want and going after it. Music is pretty confusing as a business, and it’s taken me a while to learn the different parts of it. I still have a lot to set up right, and a lot to learn but there’s a lot I would like to accomplish outside of music, so I look at all the long nights and long days as a piece of the foundation. It also took me a lot of growth to get to that point even, so yeah a big thing is I get impatient, but I know what I’m headed for and that’s what it takes.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Outside of music, I love working in film. I love putting together ideas for visuals to go with songs or any kind of story. I’d love to direct my own film eventually, but I’m enjoying learning the other parts that go into making a film. If I’m not working on any music, or writing that’s likely what I’m doing or working out. I will relax sometimes and watch cartoons, play the game, and just chill. I’m sure it’s not the most exciting rapper lifestyle but I’m about music and creating, so I do love those experiences but it’s just an experience. I’m all about MiD, Made in Difference. Elevating all those things that make me me to the highest level. I think that’s an important thing people can get from my music.
What makes you happy?
Having the freedom to do what I want at times. Sometimes I do enjoy a simple job or schedule, and I enjoy working but I want to do it on my time. So what makes me happy is freedom. Freedom to write music, go to work, or not go to work, etc. to sleep in, to wake up early, to fuckup, try again, or don’t!
