Life & Work with Tom Bender

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Bender.

Hi Tom, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Music has always been a passion of mine, especially songwriting. The songs I write are inspired by 20 years of mentoring, counseling, general storytelling and poetic writing. One thing with music is that it will always have a special place that will spark emotions and memories! So I continue to look for ways to make those connections to those who come across my music by using real-life stories or general poetic written songs that address culture issues. It’s been said that music is the language of the soul, and one of the best ways you can express your feelings is simply through listening to music.

In late 2020, I was introduced Music Producer/Artist/Vocalist Justine Blazer who was going to produce and do the vocals for my first released song “Keep The Fire Burning For Me”. From that initial introduction, Justine Blazer/Ten7Teen studios has produced all of my songs I have released over the last three years.

Recently, I have been nominated for both an “ISSA” (International Singer/Songwriter Association) and “Josie Music Awards” for my songwriting. This year I was in Billboard’s 2023 Grammy Preview magazine for consideration of a Grammy nomination on the Album “Girl Singing the Blues” by Justine Blazer. This album introduced my first song released by an artist – “Bad Love” which I co-wrote with Justine. I also have had the privilege of being featured in numerous online magazines and write-ups. As a musician, I play Acoustic/Electric Guitars, Keyboards, and Bass Guitar.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest hurdle I have come across is getting airplay. As a nonperforming artist and independent songwriter, I knew it was going to be an uphill challenge to get the songs out to listeners. Some platforms need multiple permissions or wavers to even play the songs because of legal repercussions. So I continue to look for other ideas to get the songs to the listeners.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The main thing I am most proud of would be that I am staying true to what I wanted these songs to become, songs than can bring inspiration, hope and even some healing. When I start to write a song I start off with “the story behind the song” and then I start the process of the music/lyrics for which the theme the song will be written.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Believe in yourself, listen to advice, don’t be afraid to take chances, it’s ok to make mistakes and even fail, don’t let anyone tell you can’t, stay humble, believe in the bigger picture, and only you can define what your success looks like!
