Life & Work with Tracy Crews of I live in Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Crews.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am originally from Philadelphia, I now call Atlanta home. As a divorced mother and proud grandmother of three, family plays a vital role in my life. After dedicating 22 years to education, I retired with degrees in Fashion Merchandising, Education, Criminal Justice, and Digital Filmmaking. During my career in education, I had the honor of spearheading an award-winning High School Drama Coach, fostering young talent and inspiring students through the transformative power of film and theater.
In addition to my work in education, I am a passionate poet and a two-time published author, with my works including “Life Interrupted” and “I’m Still Walking.” As an award-winning filmmaker, with over 20 years of production experience, I’m also a writer, producer, director, and editor. Producing “Neo Soul TV,” a spoken word variety show that airs on Comcast’s People TV, where I’ve covered numerous red carpet events from coast to coast. With more than 40 years of experience as a designer and seamstress, I previously owned two brick-and-mortar stores in Philadelphia.
Driven by my passion for creativity, I continuously seek new opportunities to connect with fellow creatives and explore diverse avenues of artistic expression.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My road has been anything but smooth. According to many people, I should not still be here/alive or retain this facsimile of sanity. From being a date rape baby, born to an 18 year old mother, being inappropriately touched by male adults when I was a child, barely surviving bad drugs as a teen and an abusive marriage. For whatever reason, GOD has spared me. GOD gave me the arts and the gift of creativity to cover me where I fell short and gave me direction when I didn’t want to be here. Writing has been therapeutic and healing for me. I just pick up a pen and paper or a keyboard and start writing it out of my system. I just changed the name to protect the guilty. Also my biggest hurdle has been me dealing with low self esteem and not feeling worthy. But I have learned not to compare myself to others, nor compete with others. There’s only one of me. I have learned to be the best me that I can be and do everything to GOD’s glory and not man. I am worthy, I deserve and I am enough.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
They say I’m a jack of all trades but master of a couple. I been sewing for almost 50 years. I have a degree in Fashion Merchandising and I have had 2 brick and mortar stores in Philadelphia making custom clothes and jewelry. I also write, poetry, plays and screenplays. I have produced an award winning Public Access TV program at People TV titled “Neo Soul”. “Neo Soul” is a spoken word variety program. Poetry and so much more. I have also produced, wrote, directed and edited several independent short films and a few features. I don’t know that I specialize, but I love writing and the whole filmmaking process and depending on the circle of people, I might be known for sewing, poetry and or filmmaking. I am most proud of my 3 adult children, grands and niece, but creatively, the project I’m working on at the time, is the project that I am the most proud of. As a filmmaker and editor, I believe that makes me a better writer because I write from that lens and the final edit.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Coming from Philly, I love the weather here. Atlanta is a city of opportunity and cool people. Atlanta can be very cliquish. But I have learned to take the bitter with the sweet.
