Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Greene Jr.
Hi Travis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Travis L. Greene, Jr. and I’m a rising Junior at Heritage High School, located in Conyers, GA. I am a part of the marching and concert band and play the Alto Saxophone. My other musical talents include playing the piano and organ. My future plans include attending Morehouse College to obtain a degree in Business and then attending Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service to become a licensed Funeral Director & Embalmer. I became interested in the funeral business at the age of 11. I can vividly remember attending both of my great grandparent’s funerals. Curiosity got the best of me when I saw the setup of their funerals. Then questions started entering my head, such as how did they dress the body, how does one run a funeral home, and what is the process of funeral planning?
When I was 12 years old, I served at my home church, Union Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, GA, and had the opportunity to work with the audio/visual department during church service and on the weekends during funeral services. I would get so distracted watching the funeral home workers do their job that I wasn’t focused on the soundboard or camera at all. That’s when one of the brothers of the church said, “This isn’t what you’re supposed to be doing.” My grandmother and several members of my church knew the owner of one of the local funeral homes and made her aware of my interest in the funeral home business. In 2019, my mentor Mayor Shameka Reynolds (city of Lithonia), took me under her wing at Tri-Cities Funeral Home Inc, located in Lithonia, GA. Since then, I have been serving families throughout the metro Atlanta area.
In 2021, I found a passion for making graphic designs for local businesses and other entrepreneurs that include transition & service notices, flyers, memorial plaques, portraits, praying cards, & funeral programs. I also started my own crowning ceremony business that I provide upon the request of the deceased loved ones. In 2022, my brother in funeral services, Chandler Stocks, invited me to serve at his family-owned funeral home, known as Stocks Funeral Home, located in Atlanta, GA. I’ve also been blessed with the opportunity to observe funeral services at several other funeral homes.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest challenge was my age. I was willing & eager to learn all the ins & outs but the options were limited.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a passion for working in the funeral industry. I am a funeral attendant; my task is to work public viewings, assist with funeral setups at the proper location, and occasionally help out in the prep room when needed. I am also a graphic designer who specializes in making graphic designs for local businesses and other entrepreneurs. My work includes transition & service notices, flyers, memorial plaques, portraits, praying cards, & funeral programs. I also started my own crowning ceremony business that I provide upon the request of the deceased loved ones.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to be aware of people because not everyone is what you think they are, and not everyone has your best interests at heart.
