Life & Work with Trevor Perry of Atlanta Ga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Perry.

Hi Trevor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Believe it or not I originally wanted to be a journalist. I didn’t even really know I could sing until I got to college. I started getting training and coaching to work on my shyness and that kinda bought me out of my shell. Now I can’t imagine my life without it. Once I graduated I lived in Asheville for a few years doing theatre there, until finally moving to Atlanta in 2012.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to becoming the artist that I am today has definitely not been smooth. Firstly I felt that I had so many things working against me. My crippling anxiety, being a person of color, dealing with my gender identity, and overcoming sizeizm within the industry to name just a few. You really have to be your own hypeman. It’s worth it at the end of the day!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I’m the most proud of is being able to pursue my passion, while being true to my gender expression. I love that fact that I get to play women on stage as well as men. Theatre has started to move into the realm of inclusion and I feel grateful to be one of many artist leading that change.

How do you define success?
For me success is continuous thing. I set small goals for myself all culminating in a larger goal. Getting to live out your dreams is success to me. Being a beacon in your community is success. Breaking down barriers and holding the door for the next generation is success to me.
